This series of 1:250 000 scale colour maps covers the provincial extent of Alberta and is comprised of 50 maps that are individually named using the National Topographic System (NTS) map sheet identifier. These maps display: Alberta Township System (ATS), contours (50m intervals), major hydrographic features, municipalities, major roads, railways, and select geo-administrative features (parks, reserves, etc.).

These data points are sites visited by Dr. Jozsef Toth during his 1964 to 1969 fieldwork. Dr. Toth is a distinguished hydrogeologist who developed and published his landmark 'Unit Basin' theory of steady state flow leading to the fundamental concept in hydrogeology known as 'Tothian flow system theory'. His contributions to hydrogeology turned the Research Council of Alberta, and subsequently the University of Alberta, into internationally renowned institutions for hydrogeological research. All datapoints relate to the sites in Alberta Geological Survey report INF 143. Field parameters (Temperature, Electrical Conductivity, and Flow Volumes) measured or estimated were retained as attributes to the point data. The data are in ESRI shapefile format.

Digitizing was originally done by Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA). The data were supplied to AGS by PFRA in Arc/Info coverage format (map polygon features only). Data were subsequently checked and edited by AGS.

Once a common and widespread amphibian found throughout central and southern Alberta, the leopard frog experienced a dramatic decline in distribution and numbers over much of its historic range in the late 1970s and is currently designated as Threatened under Alberta’s Wildlife Act. It has demonstrated little ability to naturally repopulate historical parts of its range. A pilot reintroduction project was initiated by the Alberta Conservation Association in 1999 near Caroline, Alberta. Frog observations and evidence of breeding activity indicate preliminary success of the project at the initial release site near Caroline and the 2001 pilot release site near Rocky Mountain House.

Description

Through the first five years of the northern leopard frog reintroduction program, nearly 12,000 leopard frogs have been captive-reared at the Raven Brood Trout Station and released into habitats within the historical range of the species. Of these 12,000 leopard frogs, approximately 7,700 frogs have been released into the upper headwaters of the Red Deer River near Caroline. Over a three-year period beginning in 2001, 2,845 frogs have been released at a site along the North Saskatchewan River near Rocky Mountain House and over a two-year period beginning in 2002, 1,310 frogs have been released at a Ducks Unlimited property near Red Deer. Confirmed leopard frog observations in 2001, 2002 and 2003 as well as evidence of breeding activity in 2002 show some evidence of the preliminary success of the project at the Caroline release site. Once a common and widespread amphibian found throughout central and southern Alberta, the leopard frog experienced a dramatic decline in distribution and numbers over much of its historic range in the late 1970s and is currently designated as Threatened under Alberta’s Wildlife Act. It has demonstrated little ability to naturally repopulate historical parts of its range. A pilot reintroduction project was initiated by the Alberta Conservation Association in 1999 near Caroline, Alberta. During the 2001 field season additional release sites were investigated in the central parkland region of the provinces and in the upper headwaters of the Red Deer River near Caroline and the North Saskatchewan River near Rocky House.
