Description

This dataset is a spatial representation of the boundary for the Kananaskis Conservation Pass for which a written legal description will be created. Visit alberta.ca/ConservationPass or albertaparks.ca for more information about the Kananaskis Conservation Pass, including a map. The pass will be in effect for both parks and public land within this boundary, pending Bill 64, the Public Lands Amendment Act passing in the legislature. The area includes Parks, Recreation Areas, Public Land, and the Public Land Use Zone (PLUZ). It excludes the McLean Creek P.R.A., Fisher Creek P.R.A., and the McLean Off-highway Vehicle Use Zone. The Public Lands Camping Pass for random camping on the Eastern Slopes does not apply to public land in the Kananaskis Conservation Pass area.

The Resource Management Area (RMA) dataset is comprised of all the polygons that represent the resource management areas of the 17 Integrated Resource Plans (IRP) - Subregional in Alberta. This dataset does not include the RMAs of Local IPR plans due to the resource restraint. Future enhancement of this data set to include Local IRP plans is feasible when resources are available. A Resource Management Area is an area identified within a Sub-Regional IRP plan for more detailed land and resource management intent on a landscape assessment. Generally, a Resource Management Area is characterized by an intent statement and detailed resource management objectives and guidelines. However, there are IRP plans which have their own specific RMA definitions. Plans include, Lakeland Sub-Regional IRP: A RMA is a geographic area of common resource management intent. Description

This monitoring plan was designed to address three objectives. First, to make a preliminary assessment of the status of all potential harlequin duck breeding streams in the bow Region of Kananaskis Country, and describe methods to continue this assessment with field work over a number of years. Second, to describe and assess the methods used to determine the population status of the ducks on the Elbow and Kananskis rivers; to assess the effectiveness of helicopter surveys used in central Alberta; and to recommend which methods to use to continue to estimate population size. Third, to describe and assess methods used to determine productivity of harlequin ducks on the Elbow and Kananskis rivers, and their validity for other streams.

Description

In 1996 harlequin ducks were added to the Yellow "A" list of endangered and threatened species in Alberta. Since 1995, research in Kananaskis Country has contributed significantly to an understanding of the habitat and conservation needs of harlequin ducks in the province. The objectives of the 2000 field season, the results of which are reported in this document, included investigating the abundance, population structure, survival rates, trends and productivity of harlequin ducks on the Elbow and Kananaskis rivers; continuing baseline work on the Sheep and Highwood rivers, and Cataract Creek; and to make recommendations regarding harlequin duck conservation.
