In rural Alberta, 90 per cent of people use private well water supplies for domestic use (e.g., drinking, cooking, bathing). Domestic well water systems are not regulated by the provincial or federal governments. The Government of Alberta along with Alberta Health Services (AHS) provides water chemistry testing of private well water and information and advice on safe water for domestic purposes; however, it is the responsibility of well owners to ensure the quality and safety of their water supply. Water quality may be impacted by contamination from natural sources or human activities and cause noticeable aesthetic issues or potential health concerns. Water samples are collected and submitted by well owners through local AHS sites for analysis of routine chemistry and trace element parameters. Flood maps are created by combining hydraulic model results with high-accuracy ground information. Field surveys and LiDAR remote sensing are used to collect river and floodplain elevations, channel cross section data, bridge and culvert information, and flood berm details. A hydrology assessment using recorded and historic flow measurements is typically used to estimate river flows for a wide range of possible open water floods with different chances of occurring each year. When appropriate, an ice jam frequency analysis is undertaken. All this information is used to build a hydraulic model of a river system, which is calibrated using highwater marks and aerial imagery from past floods to ensure that results for the different flood flows being mapped are reasonable. Flood inundation maps show areas at risk for different sized floods, including ice jam floods in some communities. The Upper Foothills Natural Subregion is within the Foothills Natural Region and is found elevationally below the subalpine and above the lower Foothills and montane subregions. The subregion occurs in a narrow band of strongly rolling to steep sloped hills along the foothills of the Rocky Mountain front ranges. The purpose of this guide is to assist with field identification of plant communities, provide ecologically sustainable stocking rates, and further define plant community types by their ecological attributes. This guide represents the analysis of 2264 plots described in the Upper Foothills Natural Subregion in which 106 plant communities are presented.

Presents findings of a survey conducted with members of the Edmonton Police Service and the Calgary Police Service to better understand the physical and psychological effects that responding to calls for service related to the opiate crisis may be having on police officers. Researchers assessed how aware police officers are of opioid-related training and the emergency services available to them, and how officers believe those services might be improved. Funding for the study was provided by the OHS Futures Research Funding Program.

Description

The Subalpine Natural Subregion is a Rocky Mountain altitudinal vegetation zone extending from an elevation of 1575 m to 2175 m at its southernmost occurrence and 1365 m to 2000 m near Grande Cache. This approximation of the guide represents the analysis of over 3400 plots described in the Subalpine subregion. In this subregion it was found there were distinct differences between the community types and ecological sites between the Central and Northern Foothills and Mountains (west of Sundre, Hinton, Grande Cache and Jasper national park), and the Southern Rocky Mountains (south and west of Calgary and Banff national park). As a result the Subalpine plant communities are identified into two ecosections (south and north). The dominant plant species, canopy cover, environmental conditions and response to grazing, are outlined for each plant community type for each ecosection.
