Description

Declining populations of burrowing owls have led to the species being classified as Endangered in Alberta and nationally. Population recovery is believed to be possible, with protection and management of breeding habitat being an important component in achieving this. Spatial identification of potential breeding habitat is the first step in this process. This study provides one of the first spatially explicit descriptions of potential critical habitat for the burrowing owl recovery team. However, this research was designed only to narrow the potential areas within which critical habitat could be designated, which is one of the first steps in the identification process. This report addresses some of the limitations of the burrowing owl habitat suitability model and provides guidance for potential conservation applications, such as critical habitat identification and habitat stewardship.

Description

Declining populations of burrowing owls in both Canada and Alberta have led to status designations of Endangered, both nationally and provincially. Alberta's Burrowing Owl Recovery Team published a ministerial-approved provincial recovery plan in 2005. The plan recommends continuing the provincial burrowing owl monitoring program in the 160 quarter sections of primarily native prairie in the Eastern Irrigation District, east and south of Brooks, collectively known as the Kininvie Blocks (K-blocks). Burrowing owl nest density has been indexed in the K-blocks 11 of the 15 years spanning 1993-2007, with the most recent surveys completed in 2007. Declines in nest density have been recorded consistently since 1997. This report documents burrowing owl nest density from 1993-2007, and includes descriptions of nest sites located in 2007.

Surveys were conducted in the Brooks area (K-blocks) during June 18-27, 2002. Five burrowing owl nest sites and two single owls were found in the K-blocks. Productivity monitoring was undertaken in the K-blocks during July 16 to 21, resulting in 2.80 young per successful nest. Although there is some reference to the Hanna Blocks in this report, they were not surveyed in 2002.

The western burrowing owl has declined significantly over much of its range in Canada and the United States. The species is listed as Threatened in the Alberta Wildlife Act and is considered At Risk within the province. Various conservation measures have been recommended including expanded monitoring of population distribution, productivity and trends. Previous surveys of burrowing owls in Alberta have typically used trend block survey methods. In comparison, roadside surveys require less personnel and equipment, and reduce the need to gain access to private lands.

Surveys were conducted in the Brooks (K-blocks) and Hanna (H-blocks) areas during June 18 - 27, 2001. Eight burrowing owl nest sites and 2 single owls were found in the K-blocks and no owls were found in the H-blocks. Productivity monitoring was undertaken in the K-Blocks between July 10 - 24 with 5.3 young per successful nest (n=6).
