Description

This report serves three main purposes. Firstly, it provides a refined representation of the sensitivity of Alberta lakes to acidifying atmospheric deposition. Secondly, it compiles data from a number of different surveys of northern lakes; spatial and temporal trends for these potentially sensitive lakes are described. Thirdly, this report documents and evaluates some of the chemical analyses used, providing a foundation for future work.

The purpose of this short paper is to highlight some of the scientific and management components of acid deposition as it pertains to northeastern Alberta. These components include: the evaluation of surface waters at risk; the chemistry of Alberta precipitation; actual deposition rates of acidic materials; the proposed, scientifically acceptable deposition rates of these acidic materials; and the magnitude of current emissions of acid forming gases in Alberta.

The former Water Quality Control Branch (WQCB) operated a number of deposition collectors around the province to determine the aeolian deposition rates of various substances to lakes. This deposition program was implemented in 1982 as part of the Wabamun Lake Eutrophication Study. Nine deposition collectors operated between 1982-86. The nine collectors were located at Nakamun East, Nakamun West, Dickson North, Dickson South, Smoke, Iosegun, and three collectors at Lake Wabamun: Wabamun (west of village, Seba (Jackpine Creek) and the Fish and Wildlife compound near Fallis.
