Reports on a Carbon Capture and Storage project to remove carbon dioxide from the process gas streams of the three hydrogen-manufacturing units which are a part of the Scotford Upgrader infrastructure. The Scotford Upgrader is owned by the Athabasca Oil Sands Project, a joint venture operated by Shell and owned by Shell, Chevron Canada Corporation, and Marathon Oil Sands LP. The Upgrader is part of Shell’s Scotford facility located northeast of Edmonton.

Description

We present an easily accessible database of interpolated climate data for Alberta that includes monthly, annual, decadal and 30-year normal climate data for the last 106 years (1901-2006), as well as climate change projections for the 21st century from 23 general circulation models. The database builds on the Alberta Climate Model and a set of five future projections that are recommended and widely used by Alberta government agencies. We added 15,000 historical and projected climate surfaces that include variables relevant for biological research and infrastructure planning, such as growing and chilling degree days, heating and cooling degree days, growing season length descriptors, frost free days and extreme minimum temperature. The database can be queried through a provided software package ClimateAB. A representative subset of these climate surfaces has been thoroughly checked against observed weather station data. Description

A rare lichen survey was conducted in selected areas of Pigeon Lake Provincial Park (PLPP) from October 14 to 18, 2008. The main objective of the survey was to document the occurrence of rare lichens and mitigate possible damage as a result of infrastructure upgrade activities, including the expansion of old camp stalls, creation of new camp stalls, shower buildings, a new boat launch and some additional tree and shrub clearings. The park is located approximately 25 km west of Wetaskiwin, Alberta and is accessed by Hwy 13. It falls within the Central Parkland, a subregion of the Parkland Natural Region of Alberta, characterized by aspen (Populus tremuloides) and balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera) stands (Kershaw et al. 2001). These stands form the main vegetation community of PLPP (Kershaw et al. 2001) and are typically known for not supporting high lichen numbers as it is often too dry.

Description

Miquelon Lake Provincial Park is a high use park in the Edmonton region and most of the campground and office infrastructure was very old and run down. As a result, Miquelon is undergoing a major capital upgrade with the addition of a new park centre. Most of the work within the strict Facility Zone has already been done or is underway, with little disturbance to natural vegetation. However, there are other areas of the park planned to be disturbed where native vegetation (including bryophytes and lichens) may include species listed on ANHIC Tracking Lists. This focused bryophyte and lichen survey was conducted to determine if such rare species do exist within the proposed footprints so that disturbance can be avoided or at least the impact mitigated.

This study was undertaken to help improve the safety of snowplow vehicles by enhancing the rear lighting visibility to approaching drivers. This research project conducted field trials testing some of the recent developments in lighting technology. New specifications recommended from this study will help both the department and the maintenance contractors in providing improved lighting for visibility of the snowplow vehicles to motorists.

In 1998, a low-power FM radio broadcast transmitter was installed and tested near Valleyview on Hwy 43, to warn travellers of inclement road and weather conditions and construction or maintenance activities. This Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) broadcast transmitter had a range of eight kilometres. The resulting report recommended that a portable HAR be evaluated on moving construction/ maintenance projects. This project follows up on that recommendation and documents the use of a portable HAR system on six mobile highway construction projects in Alberta.

Description

The cost of installation, maintenance, rehabilitation and operating costs for illuminated overhead sign structures is a concern for several Alberta Infrastructure operations managers. A very high-brightness reflective sheeting material was introduced in 1994 as a possible alternative to illumination. Since then several new products have emerged with a similar claim of superior retro-reflectivity properties when compared to traditional sheeting materials that were used in the past. A demonstration project was developed in order to assess the comparable performance of these materials and determine the minimum sign sheeting requirements for non-illuminated overhead signs. Based on this demonstration it is recommended that the department continue to specify using 3M's Diamond Grade (VIP) series 3990 as a proven product for use on overhead signs and for other specialized signing requirements.

Wooden guardrail posts are subject to splitting and rot as they age. Wooden guardrail posts that have been in service between eight and 15 years are evaluated and scheduled for replacement based on their condition and estimated remaining service life. Approximately 20,000 posts are replaced each year. Recycled plastic posts have a conservative service life of 30 years. The objective of this project was to determine if recycled guardrail posts should be accepted for use in the department's standard W-Beam (Weak Post) Unblocked Wood Post, Flexible, Longitudinal Roadside Barrier System.
