Description

Writing on Stone Provincial Park is located along an area of the Milk River where rocky outcroppings are abundant. This terrain provides excellent roosting habitat for several species of bats. There are also clumps of cottonwood trees along the river, which provide foraging habitat for all prairie bats. While bats have been captured in the park for many years, there has been no compilation of records, and there has been confusion over what areas of the park have and have not been surveyed for bats. This report describes the capture records of the author for bat work done in both the public areas of park and the restricted area of the park south of the Milk River. The report also compiles netting records for bat work done in the park since 1985.

Description

This synthesis report builds on information generated during the Northern River Basins Study. It presents information from the Northern River Ecosystem Initiative to give a new benchmark on the present health of the northern river basins. The report also provides an update on development in the basins, and describes initiatives, policies, partnerships, regulations, monitoring, research and other programs implemented to protect the environment. Results of more than 20 scientific projects undertaken during the five-year study are summarized, and a discussion and conclusions about what has been learned is presented.

Description

The Northern Rivers Ecosystem Initiative (NREI) was a five-year endeavor by the governments of Canada, Alberta, and the Northwest Territories to address commitments made by the three governments in response to the preceding Northern River Basins Study (NRBS). The NRBS was itself a five-year initiative to obtain information regarding the existing conditions in, and the effects of development on, the aquatic ecosystem of the Peace-Athabasca-Slave river basins. The NREI involved scientists and resource managers from governments, universities, industry, and other organizations. Highlights of their actions are included in this report, with further detail available in various technical science reports.

Description

The governments of Canada, Alberta and the Northwest Territories established the Northern Rivers Ecosystem Initiative to answer questions and address recommendations from the Northern River Basins Study, which took place between 1992 and 1996. The initiative was a science-based effort to gain more information to help understand the impacts of human activities on aquatic ecosystems in this region of Canada's north. This resource provides a general summary of the findings of the initiative. It also included are references to other studies and monitoring programs done during these years.

Description

The information presented in this report represents the findings from the second year of surveying western and eared grebes within the Stony Plain study area in Alberta. The surveys are projected to span a five year period and the project is designed to monitor population trends and reproductive success of western grebes and eared grebes within the Stony Plain study area. In 2004, surveying effort was focused on the primary western and eared grebe populations identified in the previous years of this project. Ground nest surveys were conducted after the nesting period, the results of which were used to derive a total breeding adult population estimate. In addition, surveys were initiated in the Parkland region in 2004, to identify waterbodies that supported potential western grebe breeding colonies.

In 2002 Alberta Environment initiated several studies on Wabamun Lake in response to public concerns about murky water near the TransAlta Utilities Corporation ash lagoon outfall and to follow-up on incidences of fish mortality. Elevated metal levels were found in the water and sediments near the ash lagoon outfall, but the cause of fish mortality was unrelated to these metal levels. The objective of this study was to determine if the sediments contained substances toxic to aquatic life forms.

Description

The Wainwright Dunes Ecological Reserve is located directly south of Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright, comprising an area of just over 2,800 hectares. The Wainwright Dunes Ecological Reserve is provincial Crown land, administered by Alberta Community Development. Current land uses consist primarily of cattle grazing on native pasture. The Buffalo Park Grazing Association holds the lease for grazing rights within and adjacent to the Ecological Reserve. The objectives of this project are:
to develop a plant community classification of sand dune and sand plain plant communities of the Wainwright Dunes Ecological Reserve, representative of the Central Parkland Natural Subregion based on field survey, correlations with other surveys and any available previously-collected data; and
evaluate and assign a preliminary provincial conservation rank to each identified community type, based on its rarity/endemism or threats to its condition.

Description

Once a common and widespread amphibian found throughout central and southern Alberta, the leopard frog experienced a dramatic decline in distribution and numbers over much of its historic range in the late 1970s and is currently designated as Threatened under Alberta’s Wildlife Act. It has demonstrated little ability to naturally repopulate historical parts of its range. A pilot reintroduction project was initiated by the Alberta Conservation Association in 1999 near Caroline, Alberta. Frog observations and evidence of breeding activity indicate preliminary success of the project at the initial release site near Caroline and the 2001 pilot release site near Rocky Mountain House.

Description

Prior to the late 1970s, the northern leopard frog was a common and widely distributed amphibian throughout central and southern Alberta. Unfortunately, the northern leopard frog has vanished from much of its former range in the province and due to the continued declining populations it was designated as threatened under Alberta's Wildlife Act in 1996. Because the small number of remaining populations of leopard frogs are patchy and separated by large areas of unsuitable habitat, their re-establishment into previously occupied habitat may rely on transplanting individuals or egg masses from existing major breeding populations in southern Alberta. This report looks at the results of the first year of a reintroduction project which was initiated in Magrath in spring 2003.
