A list of lichens that occurred in ten surveyed sites of William A Switzer Provincial Park was compiled and rare lichens that occurred in these sites were assessed following the protocol of ANHIC for rare plants. Rare lichens found in the park were: Baeomyces rufus, Collema subflaccidum, Leptogium lichenoides, Physconia perisidiosa, Ramalina dilacerata, R. intermedia and R. sinensis.

Provincial Parks and other areas where natural vegetation is protected are of great value as the flora and fauna present in them is typical of what was in Alberta before widespread agricultural activities replaced them with flora and fauna that was reduced in numbers and made up of species that were associated with cultivated grains and hay crops. As a result, many of Alberta's "rare and endangered" species are now found only, or mainly, in such protected areas. There is still much to be learned about the distribution and status of lepidopteran (moth and butterfly) species in south-central Alberta. Baseline studies of this sort provide information that helps characterize the species associated with various ecoregions, in the present case Aspen Parkland; determine the status designations (abundant, common, rare, endangered) of various species; show the effects of grazing on species composition and abundance; and allow the examination of many other parameters, including phenology, dry...

The purpose of this vegetation survey was to identify and describe all associated plant community types found within the Sundance Provincial Park and associated special management zone. As part of this process other features of unique, sensitive or disturbed nature were noted. These included, but were not limited to, new disturbance features (cutlines, well site roads, quad trails, and hiking/horse trails) significant wildlife habitat areas or migration corridors (including mineral licks and hibernacula), or areas of high biodiversity (old growth forests and highly diverse plant communities). The information collected as part of this vegetation survey not only provides a detailed assessment of the vegetation communities that occur in the region, but also identifies areas of high use, sensitive areas that may be in need of additional protection, or other significant features that may be of ecological, biological or cultural interest. This annotated bibliography is designed as a research tool for Quaternarists interested in Beringia and adjacent areas. Beringia comprises the northern hemisphere region centred on Siberia and Alaska-Yukon and bounded by the Lena River to the west and the Mackenzie River to the east. Other areas covered in this volume include western Siberia, northeasten China, northern Korea, and Japan. The bibliography includes references to research papers, books, monographs, short notes, theses, conference abstracts, conference reports, popular articles, and commentaries published between 1950 and 1993. The citations deal with surficial geology, glacial history, climate history, palaeontology, archaeology, and palaeoenvironments in Beringia between about 50,000 and 10,000 years before the present.

During June and July, 1990, archaeological investigations were conducted at the historic townsite of Waterhole, in northwestern Alberta, to mitigate the effects of potential disturbance resulting from highway realignment activities. The principle focus of the investigations was on the recovery of historic cultural materials from an undisturbed portion of the town-site. A total of 23,431 artifacts were recovered from the site.

Presents a collection of archaeological studies seeking to understand the characteristics of the prehistory of the mountains and foothills that form the Eastern Slopes along the Rocky Mountains. The papers are organized in a geographical cline from south to north, with those having a more region-wide perspective being retained for the latter portions of the volume. Although considerably greater numbers of studies have been conducted in the southern half of the region, this volume contains a roughly equal number of papers based on data generated north of the Bow River valley. In some cases, these constitute the first published record of that work.

The periods document changes in weapon technology while the phases/complexes reflect style changes through time. Archaeologists have interpreted these changes in various ways, which are explored in this manuscript.
