Residents of the Calder neigbourhood in Edmonton had concerns with diesel fume impacts on the air quality in the area resulting from a Canadian National rail yard located just south of the neighbourhood. Alberta Environment conducted mobile air monitoring surveys in the winter and summer of 2004 and the winter of 2005. In general, pollutant concentrations in the neighbourhood were not significantly different from concentrations measured at the comparison stations outside the Calder neighbourhood.

Ambient air quality objectives are established as part of the Alberta air quality management system. The purpose of this assessment report was to provide a review of scientific and technical information to assist in evaluating the basis and background for an ambient air quality objective for arsenic. Arsenic and its compounds are used in a number of applications and industrial processes. Chrome copper arsenate is used as a wood preservative. Other uses of arsenic and its compounds include the manufacturing of glass, metallurgy, the manufacturing of gallium arsenide for the electronics industry and some medical applications. In Alberta, the power and electrical utilities sector as well as the wood industry (wood preserving) contribute to arsenic emissions.

The purpose of this report was to provide both a general summary of water quality conditions in the Oldman River and to subject the extensive long-term dataset to a thorough series of trend assessments. Although monitoring on the Oldman River has frequently addressed a host of trace organic contaminants, including pesticides, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and numerous other compounds, most of these data are insufficient for statistical evaluation of trends. Hence, analysed data are largely restricted to conventional water quality variables, including such things as ions, nutrients, bacteria, and metals. Results of trend assessment on these data suggest that a number of variables have undergone significant changes over the years. Despite ongoing expansion of livestock operations, irrigation activities, and human population in the Oldman River basin, all but one significant trend detected at the two sites after 1987 are decreasing and largely indicative of improving water...

The purpose of this assessment report was to provide a review of scientific and technical information to assist in evaluating the basis and background for an ambient air quality objective for manganese. Manganese may be found in over 100 minerals, primarily in the form of oxides, silicates and carbonates. It is also found in coal and crude oil. Manganese is used primarily in making steels and nonferrous alloys. Other uses for manganese and manganese compounds include in the manufacturing of batteries, fertilizers, pesticides and ceramics, as a gasoline additive and as a dietary supplement. Manganese compounds are also used in animal feeds, pharmaceutical products, and wood preservatives and as catalysts.
