Description

The primary objective of the study was to provide a summary of the diet data and any major patterns in the diet of fish from waterbodies within the study area. The analysis included the three diet content methods used (frequency of occurrence, percent composition by count, and percent composition by weight; see Section2.1 for details) and presentation of temporal (years and where appropriate months) and spatial patterns for the fish species among the river systems.

Description

In 2002 Alberta Environment initiated several studies on Wabamun Lake in response to public concerns about murky water near the TransAlta Utilities Corporation ash lagoon outfall and to follow-up on incidences of fish mortality. Elevated metal levels were found in the water and sediments near the ash lagoon outfall, but the cause of fish mortality was unrelated to these metal levels. The objective of this study was to determine if the sediments contained substances toxic to aquatic life forms.

Description

Sulphur dioxide (SO2) is a colourless, non-flammable gas. The most significant anthropogenic emission sources of SO2 are from combustion of sulphur-containing fossil fuels, smelting sulphide ores, and petroleum refining. Other less significant sources include chemical and allied products manufacturing, metal processing, other industrial processes, and vehicle emissions. Based on data from 1990 to 2000, annual mean SO2 concentrations in Canadian cities range from approximately 3 µg/m3 (1 ppb) in Winnipeg, Regina and Saskatoon to as high as 26 µg/m3 (10 ppb) in Halifax. Annual mean SO2 concentrations in Edmonton and Calgary were 8 µg/m3 (3 ppb).
