Description

This study provides a provincial-level classification of plant associations within the Alberta limber pine, whitebark pine, and alpine heath vegetation alliances, and further characterizes other high elevation treeless vegetation types. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used to identify vegetation associations. Qualitative information was used from published and unpublished reports. The quantitative approach used Alberta Ecological Site Information System (ESIS) data (14 limber pine plots, 66 whitebark pine plots, and 447 treeless plots with elevation >/=2000 m) which were analyzed by via classification, ordination, and statistics. Qualitative and quantitative types were merged where they overlapped.

Management of environmental toxics is a major issue on the environmental policy agenda in Canada and around the world. There is growing evidence that long-term, low-level exposure can occur from the atmospheric transport of pollutants over long distances and that the substances are associated with effects on human health and the environment. No region, however remote, is assured of being safe from airborne toxic pollutants. Recognizing the significance of air toxics, it is important to document the Alberta air toxics management program. This document presents an overview of the existing management system for controlling industrial air toxics emissions.

Part 1 -The Haynes Creek Study was one of three studies funded under the Canada-Alberta Environmentally Sustainable Agriculture agreement (CAESA) to describe the effects of agriculture on surface waters in Alberta. This study was conducted in the Haynes Creek watershed to determine if runoff from cattle wintering grounds and from cultivated fields had a direct, measurable influence on stream water quality. The Haynes Creek watershed (east of the city of Red Deer) was selected because it was considered representative of very intensive agricultural activity on a landscape sensitive to water erosion. The primary purpose of this ESA study was to evaluate and provide an overview of all ESA inventories completed to date in Alberta and to determine which areas were of provincial, national or international significance. An analysis of Level 1 Natural History Theme occurrence in each of the ESAs was a significant component of this project. From an analysis of aerial photographs and dominant surficial themes identified from the literature, surficial landform units were mapped and the percentage occurrence of the 20 Level 1 Natural History Themes defined by Alberta Parks Services was determined for every surficial landform unit within each ESA.

Secondly, it compiles data from a number of different surveys of northern lakes; spatial and temporal trends for these potentially sensitive lakes are described. Thirdly, this report documents and evaluates some of the chemical analyses used, providing a foundation for future work.
