Description

The Dry and Central Mixedwood subregions cover nearly 40 per cent of the province and are dominated by aspen, with jack pine on coarse textured soils, and black spruce, willows, and sedges in the poorly drained areas. The vegetative communities in these subregions are important because they provide summer range for livestock, prime habitat for many species of wildlife, productive watersheds, recreational areas and timber production. As a result guides like this were developed to provide a framework that will easily group the vegetative community types. It is hoped these classification systems can be used by resource managers to assess the ecology of the sites and develop integrated management plans within each region. The Athabasca Plain Natural Subregion occurs south of Lake Athabasca along the Alberta–Saskatchewan border. This subregion consists of strongly hummocky and rolling sandy and gravelly uplands occurring in the eastern and southern portions of the region with level to undulating sandy fluvial and eolian plains with some prominent dune fields occurring to the east and north. This guide represents the preliminary analysis of 129 plots described in the Athabasca Plain subregion. The 129 plots represent 36 plant community types within 12 ecological sites. Included in this approximation is a crosswalk table to the Alberta Wetland Classification System and new soil type descriptions.

This guide represents the analysis of 453 plots and represents 74 grass, shrubland, conifer and deciduous community types within 8 ecological sites. The dominant plant species, canopy cover, soil, and environmental conditions are outlined for each type. Included in this approximation is a crosswalk table to the Alberta Wetland Classification System and new soil type descriptions from over 280 described soil profiles.

In forest mensuration, forest inventory and forest modeling, it is common to compare the agreement between two sets of quantitative measurements. One set could be from a commonly-accepted reference method, the other from a new or alternative method, device, or model. If the measurements are statistically the same or practically "close enough" to each other, the more complex, more destructive and/or costly method can be replaced by the simpler, less destructive and/or more efficient method. Traditional statistical approaches used for such comparisons based on bias, correlation coefficient, coefficient of determination and significance tests are inadequate and not really relevant for agreement analysis. Various agreement measures proposed for agreement analysis are also insufficient and not pertinent in many respects.
