Description

The dataset provides the known and estimated locations of active and inactive federal and provincial research plots in Alberta. The research plots includes: the Alberta Permanent Sampling Program (PSP) which incorporates Alberta Forest Service (AFS) plots, Stand Dynamic Stands (SDS) and Forest Management Plots (FMB). Alberta Monitoring Plots (MP). Western Boreal Growth and Yield (WESBOGY) Plots, TAKI Pine Trial Plots, Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB) Monitoring Plots. Duffy (DUF) Lake Plots. and miscellaneous research plots (RES) including range and genetic trial plots. All attempts to position the plot points as accurately as possible have been made however as many research programs are decades old the precision for points taken depends on the accuracy of the GPS unit (if any) used at the time, and if any differential correction was used.

Derived Ecosite Phase (DEP) v2.0 is a digital and spatial representation of ecological sites and phases in those areas of Alberta where both Alberta Vegetation Inventory (AVI) and lidar are available. The AVI is an imagery-based digital inventory developed to identify the type, extent and conditions of vegetation, where it exists and what changes are occurring. The most up-to-date ecological site phases can be found in the Ecological Site Guides. Guides are broken into individual Natural Subregions. See the Cross Reference Section for additional information. This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. The Athabasca Plain Natural Subregion occurs south of Lake Athabasca along the Alberta–Saskatchewan border. This subregion consists of strongly hummocky and rolling sandy and gravelly uplands occurring in the eastern and southern portions of the region with level to undulating sandy fluvial and eolian plains with some prominent dune fields occurring to the east and north. This guide represents the preliminary analysis of 129 plots described in the Athabasca Plain subregion. The 129 plots represent 36 plant community types within 12 ecological sites. Included in this approximation is a crosswalk table to the Alberta Wetland Classification System and new soil type descriptions.

The Boreal Subarctic Natural Subregion is found on elevated plateaus of far northern Alberta, and encompasses about three per cent of the Boreal Forest Natural Region. It is dominated by open black spruce bogs and peatland complexes with frozen organic soils and permafrost terrain. This guide represents the analysis of 142 grass, shrubland, conifer and deciduous plots described in the Boreal Subarctic Natural Subregion. The 142 plots represent 53 community types within 11 ecological sites. The dominant plant species, canopy cover, soils and environmental conditions are outlined for each type. Included in this approximation is a crosswalk table to the Alberta Wetland Classification System and new soil type descriptions.

The dominant plant species, canopy cover, soil, and environmental conditions are outlined for each type. Included in this approximation is a crosswalk table to the Alberta Wetland Classification System and new soil type descriptions from over 280 described soil profiles.

Derived Ecosite Phase (DEP) is a digital and spatial representation of ecological sites and phases in those areas of Alberta where both Alberta Vegetation Inventory (AVI) and lidar are available. AVIE and a lidar-derived slope position were created by Agriculture and Forestry. Rules used to classify the data were developed by Environment and Parks. DEP v2.0 includes updated AVI, new lidar and an Alberta Wetlands Classification System field.
