Description

The Indigenous Lake Monitoring Program (ILMP) was developed in response to Indigenous communities’ concerns about the quality of lakes of local importance as well as the Community-Based Monitoring & Knowledge teams’ mandate to explore opportunities to work together with Indigenous communities to advance environmental stewardship. The ILMP aims to support and enable stewardship and management of Alberta’s lakes based on the best available Indigenous and scientific knowledge. From 2016-21, staff from CBM&K, Watershed Sciences and Watershed Monitoring units within the Airshed & Watershed Stewardship Branch worked with community technicians from four First Nations (Bigstone Cree Nation, Cold Lake First Nations, Whitefish Lake First Nation, Dene Tha' First Nation) to collect and report on water chemistry, physical measurements, and biological samples on seven lakes in Northern Alberta. This report provides updated information on the conservation status of Porsild's bryum in Alberta, including targeted search efforts, subpopulation size estimates and potential threats to the species, and will be used to inform the provincial recovery planning process for the species. Two new subpopulations and two new subpopulation components are reported on for the first time here. Although the total colony number remains relatively unchanged, estimates for individual subpopulations have increased, decreased or appear to have remained relatively stable over time. Threats to the subpopulations are discussed.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is a complex, chronic health condition associated with numerous symptoms, linked to low-level exposure to one or more chemicals. Significant gaps exist in the scientific understanding of MCS. Variability in observed symptoms and subsequent clinical diagnoses limit the certainty of population prevalence estimates. Alberta Health commissioned a literature review from a consultancy in the fields of toxicology and environmental assessment to understand the current state of science related to MCS.

The report summarizes observed climatic changes across Canada and Alberta. It briefly discusses the causes of climate change and the methodology for the detection and causal attribution of long-term trends and changes in the frequency or intensity of extreme events. The report summarizes observed and projected changes for more than 30 climate indicators, from the temperature of the coldest day of the year to average precipitation during the growing season. Future simulations are generated using a set of global climate models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project version 5 (CMIP5), under higher (RCP8.5) and lower (RCP4.5) emissions scenarios, statistically downscaled to a high-resolution grid covering the entire province, and to 21 weather stations in Alberta. Local changes in the climate indicators are scaled to global mean temperature increases of +1, +1.5, and +2, +3 and +4OC.

This technical report, compiled by Hatfield Consulting, describes the experimental design used to determine the toxicity of oil sands process-affected water (OSPWW) treated using Syncrude's coke-slurry treatment process. The three primary components of the study design are: chemical characterization of untreated and treated OSPW; toxicological testing of treated OSPW; and assessment of aquatic invertebrate community mesocosm responses to treated OSPW.

The report is the first of two third-party science reviews completed by the Fisheries Stakeholder Advisory Committee and submitted to the Office of the Chief Scientist, Alberta Environment and Parks.

This report presents an analysis of available data and literature to gain an understanding of effluent quality in the Upper Athabasca River. Based on this analysis, variables of concern were identified and recommendations for future effluent monitoring programs were developed. The study compiled, analyzed and evaluated data and information on effluent quality from two municipalities, two coal mines and five pulp mills discharging into the mainstem Athabasca River in the Upper Athabasca Region.

Reports on a Carbon Capture and Storage project to remove carbon dioxide from the process gas streams of the three hydrogen-manufacturing units which are a part of the Scotford Upgrader infrastructure. The Scotford Upgrader is owned by the Athabasca Oil Sands Project, a joint venture operated by Shell and owned by Shell, Chevron Canada Corporation, and Marathon Oil Sands LP. The Upgrader is part of Shell’s Scotford facility located northeast of Edmonton.

Serves as a user-friendly document that presents the authoritative suite of acceptable soil series names in Alberta with some of their defining attributes. The handbook summarizes information in the Alberta Soil Names File (Generation 4) included in the Agricultural Region of Alberta Soil Information Database (AGRASID) 4.0 using the geographic framework of the 2016 version of the Soil Correlation Area (SCA) Map of Alberta. Forty-nine new soil series names have been added to the Generation 4 Names File and a number of boundary modifications have been included in the 2016 SCA Map.
