Description

The bedrock topography of Alberta is the surface of the top of Upper Cretaceous and Paleogene bedrock, and reveals geomorphic features created by Paleogene to Recent river systems and Quaternary glaciation. This dataset consists of previously published information from Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) maps and reports, as well as new data for which the quality has been assessed in order to apply a quality-weighting approach prior to modelling the bedrock topography surface. It is the data used to produce AGS Map 602, Bedrock Topography of Alberta. Explanatory notes, references, and data sources appear on a supplementary page to accompany Map 602. These notes describe the distribution of physiographic terrain elements of the bedrock surface across Alberta, and the sources and quality of the data that were used to interpolate this surface.

This digital dataset is the compilation of an analysis of the in situ stress regime in several regions of Alberta and northeastern British Columbia conducted by Dr. Sebastian Bell under a contract with the Alberta Geological Survey from 1999 to 2004. The dataset includes both new and previously published estimates for vertical stress gradients, minimum horizontal stress gradients, and stress orientation. Understanding the state of stress in the subsurface has always been important in the development of energy resources. The recent development of unconventional oil sand and low permeability hydrocarbon deposits, waste fluid disposal, greenhouse gas sequestration, and potential geothermal energy extraction all require knowledge of the state of stress to operate safely and economically. A lack of understanding of the state of stress in a given project area has the potential to negatively affect the economics of such projects and may expose operators to increased liabilities. This dataset has stratigraphic and lithological picks of the upper bedrock and Quaternary geological units in the Athabasca Oil Sands Area extending north from Cold Lake to the Fort McMurray region. The picks were compiled from the mid-1970s to 2006 to construct maps of the subsurface distribution, structure, topography and thickness of near-surface bedrock and Quaternary stratigraphic units. Alberta Geological Survey staff, as well as staff from industry and other government departments, interpreted the data.

The dataset includes subsurface stratigraphic picks of the Milk River 'shoulder' in the Alberta Plains (Townships 1 to 73, Ranges 1W4 to 2W6) made from wireline geophysical well logs. The Milk River 'shoulder' is an informal term often used to refer to a distinctive 'shoulder' (deflection) on resistivity, sonic, density, and porosity logs. The Milk River 'shoulder' corresponds to the top of the Milk River Formation in southernmost Alberta, where it represents juxtaposition between paralic deposits of the underlying Deadhorse Coulee Member of the Milk River Formation and overlying marine shale of the Pakowki Formation. It is characterized by a leftward deflection (decreasing resistivity) upwards across the contact, forming the distinctive 'shoulder signature'. To the north, the Milk River 'shoulder' represents the boundary between the Alderson Member (lower Lea Park Formation) and the upper Lea Park Formation (Pakowki equivalent). This data release is a compilation of data that characterize Alberta groundwater springs. It was compiled from several government datasets and reports, and fieldwork conducted by Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) staff members. The source datasets include the digitized Alberta Research Council (ARC) Hydrogeology Map Series, the AGS Springs of Alberta report, ARC water chemistry data, Groundwater Resources Information Services (GWRIS) Index, Alberta Environmental Protection (AEP) springs, AGS Northeastern Alberta (NEALTA) project springs, field work conducted by Dr. J. Toth and R. Stein, and other more recent spring sampling projects. The data release includes field measurements and water chemistry analyses, as well as some isotope data. Where they are available the dataset also includes references to reports for further information. Description

The dataset includes subsurface stratigraphic picks for the base of the Belly River Group/Wapiti Formation in the Alberta Plains (Townships 1 to 94, Ranges 1W4 to 14W6) made from wireline geophysical well logs. In general, the pick was made at the base of the lowest sandstone bed (overlying the Pakowki or Lea Park Formation) that was overlain by coal. If coal is absent, the pick was made at the base of the first sandstone. We screened the well data to detect errors resulting from deviated wells, as well as incorrect ground and kelly bushing elevation data. We used statistical methods to identify local and regional statistical outliers, which were examined individually.
