Description

A 10-year study was conducted to assess the quality of irrigation water within Alberta's irrigation districts. This report is one of a series of reports based on data collected from this study entitled the Irrigation District Water Quality project. The focus of this report is to examine the long-term patterns of pesticide presence in irrigation water of southern Alberta.

This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. Please consult the Distribution Information of this metadata for the appropriate contact to acquire this dataset. The Alberta Ground Cover Classification Mosaic is a land cover dataset for the province of Alberta. It is a composite of the Alberta Ground Cover Classification (AGCC) created by Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development for the green areas of the province and the Land Cover for Agricultural Regions of Canada, circa 2000 created by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada for the white areas of the province.

Serves as a user-friendly document that presents the authoritative suite of acceptable soil series names in Alberta with some of their defining attributes. The handbook summarizes information in the Alberta Soil Names File (Generation 4) included in the Agricultural Region of Alberta Soil Information Database (AGRASID) 4.0 using the geographic framework of the 2016 version of the Soil Correlation Area (SCA) Map of Alberta. Forty-nine new soil series names have been added to the Generation 4 Names File and a number of boundary modifications have been included in the 2016 SCA Map.

Description

Soapweed was approved for provincial listing as an 'endangered' species in 2003. This vascular plant species has an obligate mutualistic relationship with its specialized moth pollinator, the yucca moth, which is also considered endangered both provincially and federally. There are two known natural populations; one population is on the Agriculture and Agri-food Canada Research Substation in Onefour and the other is on the Pinhorn Grrazing Reserve along half a kilometre of southwest-facing coulee slope of the Milk River drainage. Little is known about the Pinhorn population of soapweed, except that there is little evidence of sexual reproduction at the site.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of 80 years of cultivation on a morainal landscape in east central Alberta. Specific objectives were to: determine the relationship between landscape position and erosion on cultivated slopes in complex terrain; examine the influence of landscape position on selected soil properties thought to be indicators of changes in soil quality; and evaluate the overall effects of long-term cultivation on slope processes and soil quality in this landscape and region.

This fact sheet gives an overview of a project to establish pan-Canadian benchmark sites to monitor agricultural soil quality. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada established a national network representing represent major agro-ecoregions, soil landscapes, and agricultural production systems, to serve as reference landscapes for monitoring soil quality change over time. Four of the 23 benchmark sites are located in Alberta at Falher, Mundare, Provost, and Bow Island.

The report presents an overview of the physiography, climate, ecology, general soil patterns, and selected agricultural interpretations for the Gleichen SW map sheet. The accompanying soil map displays patterns of soils at a moderate level of detail. The soils were distinguished by patterns that relate to other landscape features such as landform and slope. Soil and terrain characteristics were interpreted for three agricultural applications: production of spring-seeded small grains, irrigation, and range productivity. The generalized ratings or capability classes are intended as guidelines for land use planners and managers. Agricultural land use, land suitability for production, and land management are briefly discussed.
