Description

The primary objectives were to 1) describe the occurrence of CWD in wild deer in Alberta (raw data and weighted surveillance measures), 2) compare disease occurrence in hunter-harvest and disease control data, 3) evaluate the sensitivity of the surveillance data to detect CWD occurrence, 4) assess validity of possible geographic spread and/or numerical increase of CWD in Alberta, 5) assess spatial variation in CWD risk, 6) predict future spread, and 7) develop a sampling approach to assess occurrence of CWD in northern, western, or central Alberta.

Description

The North Border Deer Study was a 4-year collaborative research project between Alberta Fish and Wildlife and the University of Alberta conducted from January 2006 to April 2010. The study focused on the ecology and management of mule deer and white tailed deer in a CWD-infected region of east-central Alberta. Results of these field studies are expected to provide the basis for further modeling of CWD disease dynamics and spread as well as assist management over the next decade.

Description

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is an invasive alien prion agent that recently arrived in eastern Alberta. The prion causes fatal infections in cervids and significantly alters the population structure and viability of local deer herds. There is no natural barrier to further spread, no treatment to eliminate infections, and no feasible live animal test to identify infected deer. CWD has significant environmental, social, and economic effects by altering major ecosystem structure and function, as well as decreasing recreational harvest and guiding/outfitting activity. Alberta was proactive in looking for occurrence of CWD and initially proactive in responding once it was found. Current programs focus on monitoring the ongoing geographic spread and numerical increase in eastern deer populations. Hunter harvest is the primary tool to find infected deer. Population reduction is the only known tool to manage CWD in wild deer.

This report summarizes the work of an Alberta Chronic Wasting Disease Management Program Review Panel. The Panel was convened in Fall 2007 to review Alberta's past and current CWD surveillance and response strategies and efforts for wild deer and to provide recommendations to improve ongoing provincial wild deer CWD management. Based on whirtten and verbal information shared by the Fish and Wildlife Division of Alberta SRD, the Panel considered the province's CWD surveillance efforts since surveillance was initiated and then expanded when CWD was documented in wild deer in Saskatchewan in 2001 and in two Albertan cervid farms in 2002, as well as provincial CWD control efforts that began in response to the first identification of CWD in a wild Alberta deer in 2005.

CWD is a chronic degenerative and ultimately fatal disease of cervids (primarily deer and elk). It has the potential to eliminate local cervid populations and is considered a significant threat to deer populations in Alberta. The specific goal of the program was to limit disease transmission by reducing deer densities in the vicinity of CWD-positive deer. Guiding principles for the program were safety of staff and the public in conjunction with effective and efficient shooting of deer with minimal disturbance to lanholders and local residents.

CWD is a chronic degenerative and ultimately fatal disease of cervids (primarily deer and elk). It has the potential to eliminate local cervid populations and is considered a significant threat to deer populations in Alberta. Through CWD surveillance and management activities previous to 2007, two geographical areas were identified as potentially high risk for CWD incursion into Alberta: The Dillberry Lake Provincial Park area south of Chauvin and the region around the confluence of the Red Deer and South Saskatchewan Rivers.

The specific goal of the program was to improve on-going surveillance data by actively collecting heads of up to 150 adult deer or elk from each of two areas centred around the CWD-positive farms. We used agency staff (largely Fish and Wildlife Officers) to shoot deer, collect heads, salvage usable meat, and collect biological and forensic samples.
