Description

This report and the accompanying maps summarize the results of the soil survey of the County of Flagstaff in the Eastern Alberta Plains physiographic region of east-central Alberta. Most of the county is characterized by nearly-level to gently-undulating topography with deranged drainage and numerous small depressions and sloughs. Steeper topography occurs in the eastern third of the county in areas of hummocky moraine and incised meltwater scour channels.

This area covered in this survey was covered by all or parts of three separate soil survey reports: the Sounding Creek Sheet (1927), the Rainy Hills Sheet (1937), and the Sullivan Lake Sheet (1938). Advances in soil survey techniques, and a better understanding of soil genesis through accumulated research in soil science, has necessitated a re-survey of the area.

Appendices include data pertinent to the classification, interpretation and evaluation of the soil units.

The report is presented in five parts. Part I outlines the location of the study area and provides a general description of its physical environment. Part II is a summary of the concepts of soil formation, classification and mapping that were used in this survey. Part III contains detailed descriptions of the soil symbols found on the maps. In Part IV, the soil units described in Part III are interpreted for various potential land uses. Part V consists of five appendixes that contain tables of data and other technical information. Four soil maps supplement the report.

This soil survey updates a portion of the reconnaissance survey, Wainwright and Vermilion sheets. The new survey benefits from more intensive investigation of soils in the field, use of recent, good quality aerial photographs and improved map presentation. The soil map consists of 53 individual sheets that are prepared from aerial photographs. The first section of the report outlines cultural and historic features of the county. This is followed by discussions on physical features of the area and their relationship to soils. The final portion of the report outlines soil survey interpretations for agriculture and engineering.
