Description

This is the second technical report from the multistakeholder WaterSHED water quality monitoring program of North Saskatchewan River Basin tributaries. The report includes a summary of program operation, results from water quality sampling and flow monitoring, assessments of water quality relative to surface water quality guidelines, and quantification of mass export of several water quality parameters from tributaries across the basin. The report concludes with a review of program learnings realized during operation of the WaterSHED monitoring program and descriptions of ongoing and future work.

Description

This report was prepared to assess whether the soil and air quality in Fort McMurray and surrounding areas met ecological and human health guidelines during the response to the Horse River Wildfire of 2016 and after clean-up of the debris and damage that remained. The first part of the report includes high-level summaries from literature reviews on the contaminants of potential concerns from wildfire smoke and ash and their impacts on soil and human health. The second part includes the identification of potential risks to human and ecological health from ash and soil in fire affected areas, a health risk assessment of potential ash migration into residential gardens, an overview of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo's remedial program, and a post-cleanup health risk assessment based on the post remedial soil sampling program results.

Alberta Environment establishes Ambient Air Quality Guidelines under Section 14 of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA). These guidelines are part of the Alberta air quality management system (AENV, 2000). The main objective of this report was to provide a review of scientific and technical information to assist in evaluating the basis and background for an ambient air quality guideline for naphthalene.
