In June 2018 the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate released an investigative review examining the lives of twelve youth who died from opioid poisoning between October 2015 and September 2017. The review identified opportunities for system improvements in five areas, with five corresponding recommendations. All five recommendations have been accepted by the Government of Alberta, as outlined in this document.

This regulation supports the Skin Cancer Prevention (Artificial Tanning) Act, which prohibits the provision of ultraviolet artificial tanning services to minors, advertising to minors and unsupervised ultraviolet artificial tanning equipment. The regulation sets out the requirements for age verification, business signage and advertising directed to minors. The regulation also designates enforcement officers.
