Description

This Act establishes the Alberta Seniors Benefit (ASB) program which provides monthly income supplement to federal income sources including Old Age Security (OAS) and Guaranteed income supplement (GIS). Sections 2, 5 and 6 are the common responsibility of the Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services and the Minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services.

The purpose of this fact sheet is to provide the public, health care aides (HCAs), employers of HCAs and other stakeholders with information related to the regulation of HCAs under the Health Professions Act that comes into effect on Feb. 2, 2026. The fact sheet intends to provide information to help the health system can prepare for regulation of HCAs, including which health providers may be required to be registered in order to continue to practice as HCAs after regulation comes into force and what they and their employers need to be aware leading up to the date of regulation.

The fact sheet describes how HCAs currently enrolled in the HCA Directory will be transferred to HCA registers established under the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta and what registration on the registers will require to help HCAs and employers prepare for this change.

Publicly posting of the decision summaries began in April 2016 to promote transparency and to increase public awareness of the service providers’ accountability to the Protection for Persons in Care Act. Individually-identifiable health and other personal information are not included in the summaries, to protect all who were involved.
