Description

This Seniors, Community and Social Services (SCSS) dataset describes the monthly Income Support caseload in Alberta, including two client groups: those Expected to Work (ETW) and those who have Barriers to Full Employment (BFE). Income Support provides financial benefits to individuals and families who do not have the resources to meet their basic needs, like food, clothing, and shelter. The caseload is defined as the number of households categorized as ETW or BFE during a specific reporting period. Most commonly, this is reported as the average volume for a specific period (e.g., annually).   The composition of the caseload is made up of single individuals, lone-parent families, couples with children and couples without children. Biomonitoring provides a measure of internal doses of environmental chemicals or agents and allows for a more accurate measure of human health risk from these exposures. In these Alberta Biomonitoring Program datasets, information was collected as part of 3 province-wide studies investigating the serum levels of environmental chemicals (both natural and synthetic) in pregnant women in northern, central and southern Alberta (Phase 1), in children in southern Alberta (Phase 2), and maternal and umbilical cord blood samples from 7 Alberta cities (Phase 3). The goals of the program are to create a benchmark against which to track future exposures, provide a starting point for assessing health risks, indicate possible exposure sources and prioritize research efforts. Chemicals targeted for monitoring were selected using expert guidance and review of similar studies. Cyanobacteria (also referred to as blue-green algae) are common photosynthetic bacteria that live in surface waters. Under favorable conditions, such as warm water and high nutrient content, these bacteria can form nuisance “blooms”. The presence of blooms in recreational water causes unpleasant aesthetics and exposure to some toxin-producing blooms may pose potential health risks. Contact with blooms can cause skin rashes and irritation, itchy eyes, and ear infections. Inhaling water may cause allergic-like reactions, runny noses or sore throats. Ingestion of toxins can cause a range of symptoms (e.g., hepatotoxic or neurotoxic effects, and even death). There has been increased public awareness as a result of research over the past 20 years, recent monitoring efforts, and increased public education on the topic. The guidelines presented here for the treatment of sexually transmitted infections in Alberta have been adapted from the Canadian Guidelines on Sexually Transmitted Infections for provincial use with permission from the Public Health Agency of Canada. It includes the level of recommendation and quality of evidence indicators for the treatment recommendations. The indicators reflect a combination of the methodologies from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care and have been modified and simplified for use.

In rural Alberta, 90 per cent of people use private well water supplies for domestic use (e.g., drinking, cooking, bathing). Domestic well water systems are not regulated by the provincial or federal governments. The Government of Alberta along with Alberta Health Services (AHS) provides water chemistry testing of private well water and information and advice on safe water for domestic purposes; however, it is the responsibility of well owners to ensure the quality and safety of their water supply. Water quality may be impacted by contamination from natural sources or human activities and cause noticeable aesthetic issues or potential health concerns. Water samples are collected and submitted by well owners through local AHS sites for analysis of routine chemistry and trace element parameters. This indicator dataset contains information at both Local Geographic Area (for example, Lacombe, Red Deer - North, Calgary - West Bow, etc.) and Alberta levels. Local geographic area refers to 132 geographic areas created by Alberta Health (AH) and Alberta Health Services (AHS) based on census boundaries. The Federal Census (2016) and National Household Survey (2016) information is custom extracted by Statistics Canada at the local geographic area level. The population of these areas varies from very small in rural areas to large in metropolitan centers. The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) is a publicly-funded health care plan. It is established in accordance with the Canada Health Act principles of public administration, comprehensiveness, universality, portability and accessibility. The Statistical Supplement is an accompaniment to the Alberta Ministry of Health annual report and includes data on the number of people registered with the AHCIP, payments made by the AHCIP to Alberta physicians and allied practitioners (dental specialists/oral surgeons, optometrists and podiatrists) for services provided to Albertans, and payments for services provided to Albertans while they are out of the country. The Statistical Supplement also reports data on the non-group supplementary health insurance plans.

To assist with primary health care planning, Alberta Health has developed a series of reports to provide a broad range of demographic, socio-economic and population health statistics considered relevant to primary health care for communities across the province. These community profiles provide information at the Zone and Local Geographic Area (LGA) level for each of the 132 LGAs in Alberta. Each Profile offers an overview of the current health status of residents in the LGA, indicators of the area's current and future health needs, and evidence as to which quality services are needed on a timely basis to address the area's needs. The profiles are intended to highlight areas of need and provide relevant information to support the consistent and sustainable planning of primary health services.
