An amending agreement signed on November 1, 2016, by the Government of Alberta, the Alberta Medical Association and Alberta Health Services. the amending agreement include: 1- a needs-based Physician Resource Plan that will help place doctors in the communities that need them; 2- primary care improvements, including new information technology and data-sharing; 3- new compensation models for some primary-care physicians, as well as academic physicians, to reward time and quality of care given to patients rather than just the number of services provided; 4- new physician peer review and accountability mechanisms; and 5- the linking of certain benefits and compensation increases to performance on other cost-saving measures.

In December 2003, a groundbreaking agreement was ratified by Alberta Health and Wellness (AHW), the Alberta Medical Association (AMA) and Alberta’s Regional Health Authorities (RHAs). This much-anticipated agreement was heralded by the three partners as an opportunity to renew the health care system, supported with innovative investment and a unique approach to primary care, to attain the shared goal of improving access and patient care.

Description

In 1998, Alberta Health and Wellness and the Alberta Medical Association agreed to establish a new Alberta Relative Value Guide Commission. The Commission’s objective was to address longstanding concerns about fairness and equity in the fee schedule for Alberta physicians and to establish a new Relative Value Guide for Alberta. This report presents the findings of the Commission. In addition to developing a new Relative Value Guide (RVG 2000) and making code-specific recommendations for change, the Commission also developed a comprehensive set of recommendations for implementing the new RVG 2000 and ensuring that the RVG can be maintained and updated on an ongoing basis.
