Description

Immigrants in Alberta are in many respects healthier than non-immigrants. Compared to non-immigrants, they have lower mortality, lower rates for many diseases, and show signs of better health behaviors. There are, however, health conditions for which immigrants are worse off than non-immigrants. In addition, immigrant’s health status can vary significantly depending on the part of the world from which they arrive. The purpose of this report is to provide a snapshot of the health status, and a detailed look at health issues associated with immigrants to Alberta between 1994 and 2008. The results will drive further analysis and provide a basis for sound evidence to direct public health policies for improving the health of immigrants in Alberta.

Two main data sources for population counts of Alberta are the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) Registry and the Census of Canada (Census). The collection and reporting methods used by these two counts differ greatly, and it is important that these methods are fully understood to help in determining which population estimate is appropriate for use in a particular circumstance. Comparison of the data shows that at the provincial level, the total population for the AHCIP Registry and the 2006 Census are very similar. However, variations are much more distinct when looking at variations in difference by age, sex and geographic area. Generally, the smaller the population of a particular category, the greater the difference.

The main objectives of this resource is to provide an overview of selected health trends including demographics, health status, health determinants, mortality, and communicable disease incidence from an Alberta perspective within a Canadian context. It also provides an overview of changes and expected trends over time.
