Description

This wildlife status report looks at the westslope cutthroat trout, a polytypic species of trout endemic to western North America. Populations in Alberta and British Columbia exist on the northern periphery of the species' range. Although historically a widespread species, westslope cutthroat trout has shown dramatic global declines in the number and distribution of populations due to habitat degradation, overharvesting and the introduction of nonnative species. The Alberta population of westslope cutthroat trout has a national designation of Threatened. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.
