In 2015, certified reference materials for trace metals, ions and nutrients and total phosphorus were sent to three laboratories in Alberta as part of the quality assurance program to assess the performance of the commercial laboratories that generate data for the Alberta surface water monitoring programs. This report summarizes these results and makes recommendations for the surface water quality monitoring program and future certified reference material studies.

Description

The first objective of this project was to produce a preliminary assessment of soil phosphorus levels through ecodistrict estimates, and to determine the changes that have occurred over time. The second objective was to analyze the changes in terms of geographical distribution and identify areas in Alberta in which P amendments could result in a positive crop response. In particular, our analysis should be used as a basis for future research, while attempting to quantify crop response to P in particular areas of Alberta.

Alberta soil test results from 1963-67 and 1993-97 were analyzed to determine levels of available soil phosphorous across Alberta on an ecodistrict basis and to determine changes in available soil phosphorous that occurred over time. Soil available phosphorous for dryland annual crops did not change in 20 ecodistricts, increased in 15 ecodistricts, and decreased in 27 ecodistricts. Soil available phosphorous for dryland perennial crops did not change in 24 ecodistricts, increased in 7 ecodistricts, and decreased in 9 ecodistricts. Paper presented to the 37th Annual Alberta Soil Science Workshop, February 22-24, 2000, Medicine Hat, Alberta.
