This is the second study of regional demand for local food conducted in Alberta. It focused on Census District 11, which includes the City of Edmonton and surrounding areas of Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Spruce Grove, Leduc, Stony Plain, Fort Saskatchewan, and other towns and villages in the region. Topics covered in the study include: consumer awareness, market value, market profiles and the growth potential of local food market channels; top local food items; gaps in the supply of local food items/attributes; production attributes and other motivators that attract consumers to local food; barriers to consumer support for local food; and consumer perceptions of food and agriculture issues.

It focused on Census District 6, which includes the City of Calgary and the immediately adjacent region, including Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks, High River, Olds and other towns and villages in the region. Topics covered in the study include: consumer awareness, market value, market profiles and the growth potential of local food market channels; top local food items; gaps in the supply of local food items/attributes; production attributes and other motivators that attract consumers to local food; barriers to consumer support for local food; and consumer perceptions of food and agriculture issues.

Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) commissioned this study to provide a broad picture of the market potential in various local food supply chains within the province. This exploratory study examines various aspects of local food supply chains in Alberta, as exemplified by saskatoons, potatoes and lamb. For each product we considered mainstream supply chains that sell to major retail outlets, intermediated supply chains that involve intermediaries such as buying clubs, bakeries, restaurants or other businesses that sell to consumers, and direct supply chains where the producer sells directly to the consumer.

This research project was commissioned by Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development in order to provide insights into the functioning of Alberta local food supply chains. As the demand for local food grows in the province, ARD is looking for ways to encourage the development of supportive infrastructure that is necessary in order to meet the growing demand. This study is a pilot to examine one local food product – differentiated beef – across three types of local supply chains in Alberta: a direct marketing supply chain, an intermediated supply chain and a mainstream grocery supply chain. This pilot study will help to determine if future expansion of the research to other local products would be fruitful in terms of informing future policy and programs.
