Description

The Alberta government has developed a new reclamation program that is designed to strengthen the approach to contaminant management and enhances capacity needed to deal with an increasing workload in conventional oil and gas decommissioning. the old wellsite inquiry process has been replaced by a combination of technical review of applications and post-certification field audits. Use of specialists is encouraged for the first two years of the new program and, thereafter will be required.

Releases of salt to land often occur in association with activities such as oil and gas production, salt/sand processing and storage facilities at highway maintenance yards, rendering plants, runoff from snow removal dumps and the transportation of saline material for industrial use. These salts can be very mobile and have significant environmental impacts. The intent of this guideline is to develop awareness and understanding of the salt spill problem and the necessity for effective and complete remediation, to provide an overview of effective site assessment and remediation procedures, and to summarize regulatory requirements in Alberta, including salt remediation objectives.

Description

The Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act lays out the powers, roles and responsibilities of Albertans and their government in the assessment and management of environmental contamination. Part 4, Division 2 of the Act provides for the designation of contaminated sites and for the subsequent remediation of those sites by responsible persons. This guideline is intended to aid in implementing the contaminated sites provisions and to assist parties involved with contaminated sites in becoming aware of the designation process.
