Description

In March 2015 the Alberta-Northwest Territories Bilateral Water Management Agreement between the Government of Alberta and the Government of the Northwest Territories was signed. The Bilateral Management Committee (BMC) was established to implement the Agreement. Each annual report highlights the work of the BMC to manage their transboundary waters in a way that protects the ecological integrity of the aquatic ecosystem.

Results from aerial mountain goat population surveys conducted in the Willmore Wilderness Park from June 23-July 12, 2021. The objective of the surveys was to inform the status of mountain goat populations in the Northwest Region which have traditionally supported licensed or unlicensed harvest and four complexes where declines have resulted in very small populations with high conservation risk.

Results from an aerial ungulate survey conducted in Alberta’s Wildlife Management Unit 359 from January 18-21, 2022. The goal of this year’s survey was to assess the status of moose and deer since the last survey in 2015. Specific objectives were to determine a population estimate, population ratio for sex and age classes, a density estimate for moose and mule deer, and a directed total count for elk in WMU 359.

Presents results from an aerial ungulate survey conducted in Management Unit 119 (South Irvine) from February 13-14, 2021. The objective of the survey was to assess the status of the ungulate population by determining estimates for abundance, density and age-sex composition. Observations of additional species of game management or conservation concern including elk, pronghorn, carnivores, game birds, and sensitive or at risk species were also recorded.

Forest company forest management plans (FMPs) detail when, where and how timber on Alberta Crown land will be managed in order to balance social, economic and environmental needs based on input from the public, Indigenous peoples and interest groups. The forest management planning area under consideration is FMA 0900046. The FMP includes the FMA and non-FMA portions of Forest Management Unit R15, collectively known as the Defined Forest Area (DFA). The DFA is located within the Upper Athabasca and North Saskatchewan Land-use Framework planning regions in west central Alberta; it falls within the Central Mixedwood, Upper Foothills, Lower Foothills and Subalpine Natural Subregions.

Visitation statistics are reported both at the park and ‘area’ level (i.e., individual campgrounds, day use areas, group use areas, fixed roof accommodation facilities). Statistics are summarized for provincial parks and recreation areas. The data collection systems associated with these visitation statistics are discussed in detail in the Introduction Section. Ten years of historical statistics for camping, group camping, fixed roof accommodation, and day use are included in this report. To put the province in perspective, a map depicting management areas, districts and selected sites (see Appendix) is also included.

This report provides an overview of the past and present streamflow volumes of nine major rivers in Alberta. The study provides a context for understanding the current state of the resource, based on observed conditions covering a ninety-year period from 1912 to 2001. The selected rivers are affected by human activities and consumption to varying degrees. The intent of this study is to demonstrate at an overview level whether any significant long-term trends were notable. More subtle changes, such as in seasonal averages or changes in annual extreme events are beyond the scope of this report.
