Description

Provides policy direction for post-secondary institutions and other adult learning providers that reflects and supports the Adult Learning System Vision and Principles. This includes policy direction on institutional roles, mandates, relationships with each other, with government, and to some extent with their communities. The framework differentiates the publicly-funded post-secondary system in Alberta into six sectors and assigns each of the 26 publicly-funded institutions to one of the sectors, providing descriptions of the programming, research and collaboration mandates of each sector.

The Student Aid sector of Alberta Advanced Education is responsible for assigning a designation status once a post-secondary program has been approved or licensed. It is a foundation that can ensure the best program and institutional mix to meet the needs of learners, the economy, and society. This Roles and Mandates Policy Framework also serves as a foundation for ongoing evolution of Alberta's advanced education system. Ultimately, an effective system will be one that meets the needs of learners, promotes access, leverages capacity, and allows resources to be effectively allocated to provide outcomes with the greatest value. This framework also ensures strategic long-term planning for advanced education in Alberta by building a more resilient and responsive system that aligns supply and capacity to the demands of learners, society, and the economy.
