Description

Benzo[a]pyrene is the most well known polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) in a large group of organic compounds with two or more fused aromatic rings. PAHs are formed mainly as a result of incomplete combustion of organic materials during industrial and other human activities. These activities include processing of coal and crude oil, combustion of natural gas, combustion of refuse, vehicle traffic, cooking and tobacco smoking, as well as natural processes such as forest fires. Motor vehicle exhaust and re-suspension are major contributors of PAHs, including benzo[a]pyrene, to urban air. PAHs in urban air have also been associated with residential wood burning emissions.

Description

In January 2004, Alberta Environment contracted Timberline Forest Inventory Consultants to conduct data analysis and basic data interpretation of a dataset containing soil chemical analysis data. These data have been collected at regular intervals at eight sites (six coniferous forest sites and two grassland sites, mostly on coarse-textured soils) across the province since 1981 in support of the Long Term Soil Acidity Monitoring program. The main body of this report outlines the steps that were taken with respect to data preparation, software and procedures used, and assumptions made in handling the data. This report also makes comments on possible data limitations and provides some recommendations related to improving ongoing sampling and analysis.

Description

Ambient air quality objectives are established as part of the Alberta air quality management system. The purpose of this assessment report was to provide a review of scientific and technical information to assist in evaluating the basis and background for an ambient air quality objective for cumene. Cumene is a colourless, flammable, and volatile liquid with a sharp aromatic odour. It is nearly insoluble in water but soluble in alcohol and other solvents. This substance is found in crude oil, gasoline, solvents, plants (essential oils), food, and cigarette smoke. Cumene is primarily used for the synthesis of acetone and phenol, and also used as a catalyst for acrylic polyester resins and as a solvent in the automobile and printing industries.

Description

Ambient air quality objectives are established as part of the Alberta air quality management system. The purpose of this assessment report was to provide a review of scientific and technical information to assist in evaluating the basis and background for an ambient air quality objective for ethylbenzene. Ethylbenzene is a clear, colourless, volatile liquid under standard conditions. It is a flammable liquid and is combustible at room temperature and standard atmospheric pressure. Ethylbenzene is primarily used as a precursor in the production of styrene and cellulose acetate, but is found in a large number of industrial, commercial and consumer products. Ethylbenzene is a naturally occurring component of crude oil. It is formed during combustion of organic materials; thus, forest, grass and other biomass fires will release ethylbenzene to the atmosphere.

In October 2000, the Clean Air Strategic Alliance (CASA) facilitated a workshop aimed at identifying priorities with respect to ambient air quality guideline development in Alberta. The results of workshop discussions indicated that there was a need for an ambient volatile organic compound (VOC) guideline in Alberta. This report provides a summary of background information regarding: ambient concentrations and emissions of VOC in Alberta; endpoints and thresholds of VOC on human health and the environment; and VOC guidelines currently used in Alberta and around the world. This information is to be used in setting an air quality guideline for total VOC in Alberta.

In 1987 a detailed inventory of NOx sources was completed for the province, as part of the Acid Deposition Research Project (ADRP). This project included identification of the source and technology, location, and estimation of emissions. In 1988, Informational Letter 88-5 (IL 88-5) was jointly issued by the Energy Resources Conservation Board (now the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board) and Alberta Environment. For the first time in Alberta, this document required the use of low NOx technology for reciprocating engines. In December 1992 the CCME issued the National Emission Guidelines for Stationary Combustion Turbines, which applied to new turbine engines. It is desired that the penetration of the technologies prescribed in these Guidelines and other low NOx technologies be determined for Alberta.
