This report describes a project to measure particulate matter emission profiles and visible smoke emissions of vehicles typical of the Alberta diesel-powered on-highway fleet. This information is intended to provide background information and to act as a baseline for development of programs to control particulate matter emissions.

Isopropanol is a colourless, clear, volatile liquid under standard conditions. It can react with air or oxygen to form unstable peroxides. Isopropanol has widespread use as a solvent and as a component of many industrial, commercial and consumer products. Isopropanol is also a naturally occurring metabolic product in a variety of microorganisms and plants; as such, it occurs naturally in a wide variety of foods.

It is also used in textiles and as a solvent and wetting agent.

Xylenes are clear, colourless, volatile, flammable liquids under standard conditions. They are a naturally occurring minor component of all petroleum products. Also, they are formed during combustion of organic materials and are present in volcanic gases. Anthropogenic xylenes are primarily produced via the catalytic reforming of petroleum and as by-products of the cracking of crude and heavy oil. The major use of xylenes is as an additive to gasoline during blending to enhance the fuel’s octane rating. Pesticide residues in aquatic environments in Alberta were relatively poorly documented until recently. Although pesticides had been analyzed for environmental samples since the early 1970s, and in treated water supplies since 1978, detection limits were high and few pesticides were detected. Recently, new analytical instrumentation has enabled a 1-2 order of magnitude reduction in detection levels, resulting in information on pesticides in treated water supplies that was not available before.
