Description

Alberta Environment was requested to monitor the air quality in the vicinity of the Edmonton Fire Department's training facility during a fire fighting exercise. A number of gases and particulate matter were monitored at various locations. Two mobile units and other supporting instrumentations were used to conduct monitoring. Of particular interest to the study were the concentrations of particulate matter, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and formaldehyde. Particulate matter and PAHs were found to be elevated closer to the burn site. There was also evidence that particulate matter emitted at the training facility affected a business area located 0.5 km downwind.

Description

Particulate matter may be generated and released into the atmosphere during the moving, cleaning and/or drying of grain. Agricore United is the largest grain handling company in western Canada. Grain is moved through Agricore's facility at Vermilion year round, albeit operations are at a higher capacity during the late summer / early fall months. The Vermilion facility is located in close proximity to residences. Residents of these homes have filed complaints with Alberta Environment of elevated dust/particulate levels int he area. To address these complaints, Alberta Environment deployed particulate matter monitors to two locations near the Agricore United facility, where sampling was conducted between January 27th and April 16th, 2007.

On August 3rd, 2005, 46 Canadian National Railway Company rail cars derailed approximately 65 km west of Edmonton, Alberta. Approximately 712,000 L of Bunker C heavy fuel oil and 88,000 L of Imperial Pole Treating Oil were released from the ruptured cars. The oils saturated the adjacent ground, flowed on the surface, and entered the lake waters on the north shore of Lake Wabamun. A variety of scientific support surveys or activities were initiated by Alberta Environment and Environment Canada as a result of the spill, including a study to investigate the potential ability of Lake Wabamun sediment microorganisms to biodegrade spilled Bunker C oil. This report describes results of this study.

Currently there is no standard method for field measurement and estimation of dry deposition of acidifying pollutants in Alberta. Alberta Environment is pursuing development of an inexpensive standard method. This may involve a combination of continuous, intermittent, and/or passive field measurements of acidifying pollutants and using inference methods for estimating sulphur and nitrogen species dry deposition. An overall objective of this study was to continue evaluating inferential methods for estimating dry deposition rates.
