Description

This dataset contains the outlines of the evaluated areas for shale- and siltstone-hosted hydrocarbons in Alberta from the Energy Resources Conservation Board/Alberta Geological Survey Open File Report 2012-06. These evaluated areas are for the following units: - Duvernay Formation, - Muskwa Formation, - Montney Formation, - Basal Banff/Exshaw study area, - North Nordegg study area, and - Wilrich Member. For information on the extent and characteristics of the shale and siltstone units and the overall resource assessment approach see Energy Resources Conservation Board/Alberta Geological Survey Open File Report 2012-06.

Description

The dataset includes subsurface stratigraphic picks for the top of the Foremost Formation (Belly River Group) in the Alberta Plains (Townships 1 to 52, Ranges 1W4 to 5W5) made from downhole wireline geophysical well logs. The top of the Foremost was picked at the base of a continuous sandstone or siltstone bed (low-gamma-ray) of variable thickness overlying the Taber coal zone. Well data were screened to detect errors resulting from deviated wells, as well as incorrect ground and kelly bushing elevation data. We used statistical methods to identify local and regional statistical outliers, which were examined individually.

This data release is a compilation of data that characterize Alberta groundwater springs. It was compiled from several government datasets and reports, and fieldwork conducted by Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) staff members. The source datasets include the digitized Alberta Research Council (ARC) Hydrogeology Map Series, the AGS Springs of Alberta report, ARC water chemistry data, Groundwater Resources Information Services (GWRIS) Index, Alberta Environmental Protection (AEP) springs, AGS Northeastern Alberta (NEALTA) project springs, field work conducted by Dr. J. Toth and R. Stein, and other more recent spring sampling projects. The data release includes field measurements and water chemistry analyses, as well as some isotope data. Where they are available the dataset also includes references to reports for further information. This dataset (lineaments_ln_ll.shp) comprises structural features compiled into GIS format from existing literature, published up to 2003. The data represent fault/lineament locations known or inferred in the Alberta Plains. We have chosen to digitize and publish all lineaments from source maps even where they extended beyond the Alberta boundary. Each compiled feature is characterized by a set of attributes including: affected formations (oldest affected and oldest non-affected stratigraphic unit), fault type, fault sense of displacement, evidence used to infer the fault/lineament, original reference information and publication scale, and an estimate of the georeferencing error. The completeness of the captured attribute set varies for each feature as a function of the level of detail in the source article. The data set should be used cautiously. This dataset is a GIS version of part of Map 227, which is a regional synthesis of various published and unpublished maps. The data represent drift isopachs for Alberta. The southern part of Alberta, from 49 to 56 degrees north, was primarily compiled from existing 1:250,000 bedrock topography maps. The interpretation of the remaining northern portion of the province was based mostly on limited borehole data and information from existing 1:250,000 hydrogeological maps. The exposed areas represent areas where drift is absent or thin and discontinuous. Contour intervals are irregular and depend on local data density.

This Alberta diamond inclusion dataset includes electron microprobe analyses of garnet, clinopyroxene, olivine, ferropericlase and rutile inclusions from diamonds sampled by the Buffalo Head Hills kimberlite field. The data are compiled from Davies et al. (2004) and Banas (2006). Diamond inclusions are of particular research interest in diamond exploration and mantle petrology because they provide direct information about the chemical composition of upper and lower mantle and about the petrogenetic sources of diamonds in a given area/deposit.

The first clue to the presence of possible diamond-bearing source rocks in northern Alberta was the discovery of a perfect octahedral diamond, estimated at about 0.83 carats in weight, by farm worker Einar Opdahl during 1958 in the Evansburg area of west-central Alberta. Since the Opdahl diamond, no new diamond finds were reported in northern Alberta until the 1990s, when several occurrences of alluvial diamond and diamondiferous kimberlite were discovered.
