Description

Forest company forest management plans detail when, where and how timber on Alberta Crown land will be managed in order to balance social, economic and environmental needs based on input from the public, Indigenous peoples and interest groups. The forest management planning area under consideration is Forest Management Agreement FMA 9700032. The forest management plan includes the Forest Management Agreement and non-FMA portions of Forest Management Unit R13, collectively known as the Detailed Forest Area. The Detailed Forest Area is located within the Upper Athabasca, and North Saskatchewan Land-Use Framework planning regions in west central Alberta; it falls within the Subalpine, Upper Foothills, and Lower Foothills Natural Subregions.

The woodland caribou is included on the list of species that may be at risk in Alberta. This report summarizes past and ongoing research on woodland caribou ecology in Alberta as a step in updating its status designation. The report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

Recent surveys indicate that it appears to be relatively common in Upper Waterton Lake and relatively uncommon in the Athabasca River. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

Forest company forest management plans (FMPs) detail when, where and how timber on Alberta Crown land will be managed in order to balance social, economic and environmental needs based on input from the public, Indigenous peoples and interest groups. The forest management planning area under consideration is FMA 9700033. The FMP includes the Forest Management Agreement and non-FMA portion of FMU S19, collectively known as the Defined Forest Area (DFA). The DFA is located in north central Alberta within the Upper Athabasca, Upper Peace and Lower Peace Land-Use Framework planning regions. The DFA falls within the Central Mixedwood and Dry Mixedwood natural subregions.

Wind farms have an effect on the landscape, are a cause of bird and bat mortality, and can also result in wildlife disturbance and habitat degradation. Wind energy projects, like other development projects with potential environmental impact, need to be well planned in order to avoid or mitigate these impacts. This document summarizes potential wildlife issues associated with new wind energy developments in Alberta, and provides guidelines for minimizing impacts of such projects on wildlife.
