Description

All landfills and composting facilities regulated by Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) are required to have certified operators. This includes any Class II and Class III landfill that accepts only industrial waste. Composting facilities that are regulated through the Natural Resources Conservation Board do not need to have certified operators under this program. The Alberta Landfill and Composting Facility Operator Certification Program involves industry associations as certifying partners. The certifying partners: Administer exams; Manage certificates; Provide training programs. The Northern Lights Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA-NLC) and the Compost Council of Canada (CCC) are the certifying partners representing the landfill industry and composting industry, respectively.

The objectives of the 2014 investigation and monitoring program were to: Evaluate the potential for vapour migration in residences in the area; Assess exposure and risk to residents in the vicinity through direct measurement of indoor air; Investigate the effects of seasonality on potential vapour intrusion, soil vapour concentrations and presents of NAPL; Evaluate if attenuation and if possible biodegradation is occurring between the source and residents; and where possible, delineate the extent of NAPL in the vicinity of monitoring well MW10-6 and further characterize soil and groundwater conditions in this area.

The town of High River in south Alberta suffered from severe flooding in June 2013. A number of studies have been carried out for the Town of High River and the Alberta Flood Recovery Task Force, resulting in a number of proposals to mitigate future floods. This report presents a review of two reports in which flood mitigating measures are being proposed for High River, and presents advice on whether the proposals presented in the two reports should be implemented.

The species is fairly common in Alberta, but their general status was re-evaluated in 2010 from Secure to Sensitive due to significant annual declines in their population. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

The proposal involves a Gas To Liquid Facility (GTL) that will convert natural gas to GTL liquid products, with a production capacity of 96,000 barrels per day, of GTL diesel, GTL naptha and liquefied petroleum gas. In the North Saskatchewan River, the abundance, distribution and the factors that control macrophytes are poorly understood. To address this data gap, Alberta ESRD contracted Golder Associates to assist with conducting a 2010 aquatic macrophyte sampling program, which consisted of three main components: 1) a visual observation survey of macrophyte density between Devon and Pakan; 2) a longitudinal sampling program that assessed macrophytes and other biotic and abiotic parameters between Rocky Mountain House and the Alberta/Saskatchewan border; and 3) a seasonal sampling program that assessed the temporal variability of macrophytes and other biotic and abiotic parameters between Fort Saskatchewan and Pakan.
