Description

This document provides a framework for the management of Cypress Hills Provincial Park for a ten-year time period commencing on the approval date of this plan. It forms the foundation from which specific management and operational initiatives will be developed for the park. This plan will be used by park staff and will also be available for use by other public agencies and individuals such as volunteers, leaseholders, members of special interest groups, and members of the public who have an interest in the management of Cypress Hills Provincial Park. It will also provide information that will assist in preparing annual operating plans and budgets.

Staff of Alberta Environment, within the context of existing legislation and regulations, prepared the plan. It outlines the type and extent of outdoor recreation and tourism opportunities, facilities and services. This plan guides management of Peter Lougheed and Spray Valley Provincial Parks consistent with legislation and policies that are in effect. The plan conforms with the existing Provincial Parks Act, other related legislation and the Kananaskis Country Recreation Policy 1999. The plan will be reviewed from time to time to ensure that it remains consistent with current legislation and policy. This plan provides a statement of management intent and objectives for the area. In addition, it identifies permissible public recreation activities, related facilities and provides guidelines for their future management and development. It also recognizes existing dispositions for hydro electric power generation, as well as the desirability of maintaining viable recreation/tourism and business opportunities in the area. Visitation statistics are reported both at the park and ‘area’ level (i.e., individual campgrounds, day use areas, group use areas, fixed roof accommodation facilities). Statistics are summarized for provincial parks and recreation areas. The data collection systems associated with these visitation statistics are discussed in detail in the Introduction Section. Ten years of historical statistics for camping, group camping, fixed roof accommodation, and day use are included in this report. To put the province in perspective, a map depicting management areas, districts and selected sites (see Appendix) is also included.

The guidelines in this document are intended to provide a basic framework upon which inventories can be structured, and some of the things that need to be considered when conducting a natural heritage inventory in a provincial park or other type of protected area, either existing or proposed. Further, the guidelines are intended to provide a measure of consistency and standardization when collecting data for and providing data to the Alberta Natural Heritage Information Centre (ANHIC) and to other units or groups that collect and use natural heritage data.

Description

Cottonwood Consultants Ltd. of Calgary was contracted by Alberta Environment to undertake a natural history inventory at Grizzly Ridge Wildland Park in the Swan Hills area of north-central Alberta. No previous comprehensive natural history studies have been carried out on fauna and flora in the area. The 2000-2001 study included a literature review, a multi-season field inventory, and aerial photograph/biophysical map interpretation (including GIS mapping). The objectives of the project were to: conduct an ecological land classification and define ecological units; produce a bird and mammal inventory of the park; identify and describe special features and sensitive and disturbed areas in the park; provide GIS files and hardcopy maps of the ecological land classification; and provide a report describing the ecological characteristics and special features of the area.

This ecological land classification for Carson Pegasus Provincial Park was commissioned by Alberta Environment. The study area encompassed the entire park and is situated within the Foothills Natural Region with portions of the park straddling both Upper and Lower Foothills Subregion. The majority of the park is found in the Lower Foothills Subregion and totals approximately 1, 209 Ha in area.
