In June 2019 the Alberta Ombudsman released the report Treating People with Mental Illness Fairly: Report on Mental Health Review Panels. The report made recommendations directed to mental health review panels, Alberta Health, Alberta Health Services (AHS) and Covenant Health to improve administrative fairness of the review panels' hearing processes and procedures. This document contains the actions taken by the various entities in response to the recommendations.

The evaluation was designed to generate information to support improved stroke care and ensure quality services are in place for Albertans. Topics covered include: history and milestones of the APSS; educating Albertans about stroke; reducing stroke occurrence and mortality; improving access to care; and improving health care system efficiency and satisfaction with care. The Minister of Health commissioned Dr. Dennis Kendel to conduct an independent review of Alberta Health Services (AHS) credentialing and privilege awarding policies and procedures pertaining to the medical specialties of diagnostic imaging (radiology) and pathology. The review included a look at the scope of practice currently undertaken by each radiologist and pathologist to ascertain if any of these physicians are practicing beyond the scope authorized by AHS and/or the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta. The report presents 10 recommendations for Alberta Health Services, including the establishment of standardized provincewide privilege lists for diagnostic imaging, pathology and all other disciplines.

The influenza pandemic outbreak experienced in 2009 was recognized as an opportunity to review Alberta’s plans and preparedness and determine what could be improved in a future response to another pandemic or other public health emergency. The Health Quality Council of Alberta (HQCA) was asked to conduct a review of the Alberta response. The review focused on the activities of Alberta Health and Wellness, Alberta Health Services and Alberta Emergency Management Agency. The review revealed many good outcomes and commendable practices from Alberta’s response to the pandemic which should continue in future responses to public health emergencies. It also identified systemic shortfalls that limited Alberta’s ability to respond effectively. The report makes 18 recommendations to address these shortfalls.

This report makes recommendations regarding the key components that should be included in the Alberta Health Act based on input received from Albertans. The report also proposes measures that should be taken to ensure the Act operates as intended. In addition, the report sets out priorities that Albertans have identified for action as Alberta proceeds to clarify outcomes, develop policies, revise legislation and make decisions for the future of its health system. Finally, the report recommends next steps for the Government of Alberta in pursuing further work on Alberta’s health legislation. The report is presented in two parts. Part One offers 15 recommendations based on feedback received from Albertans. Part Two is devoted to an overview of the diverse input received from Albertans through the consultation process.

Following the declaration by the World Health Organization of the spread of the H1N1 virus as a global pandemic in the first half of 2009, Alberta Health and Wellness contracted a consulting firm to assist in the development of a governance model to enable timely cross-ministry decision-making during a pandemic response. A number of stakeholders were interviewed and two governance models were reviewed. This report presents a recommended pandemic response governance model which is adapted from the strengths of the two models under review.

A Health Action Plan for Alberta was announced by the Minister of Health and Wellness in April 2008. A key component of this plan is the development of a pharmaceutical strategy. A consultation process was implemented to meet key stakeholders, summarize their comments, and make key recommendations. Meetings were held with 16 stakeholder groups representing patients, physicians, pharmacists, employers, benefit providers, and the pharmaceutical industry. Written submissions were also welcomed. This document summarizes the stakeholders input and presents 10 recommendations for the government to implement.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is the leading cause of preventable birth defects and one of the leading causes of developmental delay in children in Canada. The Physicians for FASD Prevention project, whose findings are presented in this report, provided valuable insight into the disparities between research findings and recommendations for FASD screening and prevention, and the realities of primary care physicians providing those services in every day clinical practice. This project attempted to develop and implement supports for physicians to improve FASD screening and prevention services they deliver to all women of childbearing age.
