Description

This wildlife status report looks at the woodland caribou. The woodland subspecies of the caribou is distributed across the forested and mountainous regions of Canada, including northern and west-central Alberta. The woodland caribou is included on the list of species that may be at risk in Alberta. This report summarizes past and ongoing research on woodland caribou ecology in Alberta as a step in updating its status designation. The report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

Recent surveys indicate that it appears to be relatively common in Upper Waterton Lake and relatively uncommon in the Athabasca River. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

This manual is intended for use in conjunction with field data forms RDB 2002- 1 thru 4, developed by the Resource Data Branch, Alberta Sustainable Resource Development. The sections within this manual describe the field collection and data recording procedures that should be utilized when conducting Ecological Land Classification Projects. The definitions and codes provided in this manual insure data collection and recording procedures for conducting Ecological Land Classification Studies are consistent throughout the province. This is an important consideration since all data recorded on these field forms is to be entered into the Ecological Site Information System database (ESIS).
