Description

The purpose of the Smith Hondo Local Plan is to provide direction to land managers for managing and using public land and resources in the planning area to provide a variety of benefits. The plan balances community, economic and environment issues and values with government policy for the allocation, use and management of public lands and resources within the planning area. The local plan will be the implementation document for a segment of the Big Bend Sub-Regional Integrated Resource Plan (IRP).

This ecological land classification for Carson Pegasus Provincial Park was commissioned by Alberta Environment. The study area encompassed the entire park and is situated within the Foothills Natural Region with portions of the park straddling both Upper and Lower Foothills Subregion. The majority of the park is found in the Lower Foothills Subregion and totals approximately 1, 209 Ha in area.

Description

This study delineates flood hazard areas and determines design flood levels along an approximate 31 km length of the Highwood River through High River. The design discharge for the Highwood River ranges from 750 m³/s at the upstream study extent to 650 m³/s at the downstream extent. Included in the study area are lands flooded by overflow from the Highwood River into the Little Bow River via Baker Creek and the Little Bow Canal, along approximately 3 km of Baker Creek and almost 1 km of the Little Bow River. The flood hazard mapping in a portion of the overflow area and along the Little Bow River is currently under review by Environment and Sustainable Resource Development. The study was prepared in August 1992. Flood information available after study completion may not be reflected in the current flood hazard study report or flood hazard mapping.

Description

Although the proposed mill would be one of the least polluting bleached kraft pulp mills in the world, and even though it would have economic benefits associated with it, the Review Board recommends that it not be approved at this time. The major reason for this recommendation is the effluent which would be discharged to the Athabasca River, and in particular, its content of chlorinated organic compounds and the cumulative effects this effluent and that from other mills would have on the Athabasca-Peace River system. The Alberta-Pacific would use technology which would reduce the chlorinated organic compounds to a low concentration. However, the limited available data indicate that there are already measurable amounts of dioxins and furans in fish in the river system near existing mills and extending to more than 1000 km downstream.

The planning program described in this report is designed to provide a framework plan for the management of water to meet those needs. The Program is being conducted in two phases. The first, or strategic planning phase, the basis for this report, will result in the development of a strategy for the use and management of water in the basin. The program will identify objectives to be achieved through water use and management, and establish, from among a number of options, the most appropriate water use and management strategy for contributing to the achievement of those objectives. The second, or framework planning phase, will set out specific ways and means for managing water to achieve the objectives, consistent with the strategy.

The availability and chemical quality of groundwater have been evaluated for the area referred to as Jackfish-Mayatan Lakes. The information was requested by the County of Parkland for preliminary planning of country residential subdivisions. There should be sufficient groundwater supplies available for low density country residential subdivision development within the major portion of the study area.

Description

In August of 1974, Alberta Environment conducted groundwater exploration at Peerless Lake Settlement in order to develop potable groundwater sources for the area residents. Ten bored wells were constructed, each of which produces adequate quantities of groundwater for domestic needs. Water quality s acceptable, although iron concentrations somewhat exceed recommended limits. High static levels are present at several wells. These wells may be prone to freezing in winter and may require insulation to maintain year-round operation.
