Environmental assessment registry documents pertaining to the proposed St. Mary River Irrigation District Chin Reservoir Expansion project. Chin Reservoir is an off-stream storage reservoir that is located roughly in the middle of St. Mary River Irrigation District (SMRID) irrigation network, approximately 30 kilometers (km) east of Lethbridge and 15 km south of Taber. The Chin Reservoir Expansion Project (the Project) involves the construction of a new dam which would result in a larger reservoir. The new dam would be approximately 40 meters (m) in height and is expected to inundate (flood) approximately 650 hectares (ha) of privately held land within Chin Coulee. Forest company forest management plans (FMPs) detail when, where and how timber on Alberta Crown land will be managed in order to balance social, economic and environmental needs based on input from the public, Indigenous peoples and interest groups. The forest management planning area under consideration is FMA 0900044 allocated to Mercer Peace River Pulp Ltd. The FMP covers Forest Management Unit P21 located entirely within the Lower Peace Land-Use Framework planning region in northern Alberta; it falls within the Dry Mixedwood, Central Mixedwood, Upper Boreal Highlands and Lower Boreal Highlands natural subregions.

The Athabasca Plain Natural Subregion occurs south of Lake Athabasca along the Alberta–Saskatchewan border. This subregion consists of strongly hummocky and rolling sandy and gravelly uplands occurring in the eastern and southern portions of the region with level to undulating sandy fluvial and eolian plains with some prominent dune fields occurring to the east and north. This guide represents the preliminary analysis of 129 plots described in the Athabasca Plain subregion. The 129 plots represent 36 plant community types within 12 ecological sites. Included in this approximation is a crosswalk table to the Alberta Wetland Classification System and new soil type descriptions.

This trial was conducted by ATISC to identify any large differences in seed quality between newer older lodgepole pine cones. This included germination tests on fresh seed and also estimates of storage times and use for seeding by performing artificial ageing tests. The results may be used to support the alteration of lodgepole pine cone collection practices in the future and help to ensure higher quality seed lots going forward, resulting in longer use times and lower costs to industry.

The goal is to provide data to support generalized recommended method(s) for each or both species so nurseries can make an informed choice in their future sowing protocols to help maximize seedling production and minimize seed use and cost to seed owners.
