Sundance Provincial Park is located in the Foothills Natural Region of west central Alberta approximately 21 kilometres west of Edson. The Sundance Provincial Park Management Plan provides a long-term vision and day-to-day guidance for stewardship of the park. Staff of Alberta Environment, within the context of existing legislation and regulations, prepared the plan. It outlines the type and extent of outdoor recreation and tourism opportunities, facilities and services. The plan provides direction regarding the delivery of heritage appreciation programs that assist Albertans and visitors to understand and appreciate our natural heritage while ensuring its ongoing preservation. The management plan was developed with public input and is intended to provide for the periodic review and revision to reflect the current thinking of Albertans on how our natural heritage will be preserved for present and future generations. The plan conforms with the existing Provincial Parks Act, other related legislation and the Kananaskis Country Recreation Policy 1999. The plan will be reviewed from time to time to ensure that it remains consistent with current legislation and policy. This plan provides a statement of management intent and objectives for the area. In addition, it identifies permissible public recreation activities, related facilities and provides guidelines for their future management and development. Description

The Birch Mountains to the northwest of Ft. McMurray are located within the Upper and Lower Boreal Highlands Subregions . A sizeable protected area, the Birch Mountains Wildland Provincial Park (WPP), is located primarily within the bounds of the Upper Boreal Highlands Subregion. The WPP contains extensive bogs, patches of pine, aspen and birch forest as well as riparian meadow habitats. The park occupies an area of 144,505 ha and was the focus of a lepidoptera survey in 2004. The Upper Boreal Highlands Subregion is characterized by steeply sloping dissected plateaus and undulating and hummocky upper plateau surfaces. In addition to the Birch Mountains, the Upper Boreal Highlands Subregion includes the upper slopes and plateaus of the Buffalo Head, Naylor and Clear Hills. This Subregion is entirely surrounded by the Lower Boreal Highlands Subregion.

Description

An odonate survey was conducted in the summer of 2000 (Hornung 2001) in the Maybelle River, Marguerite River and Richardson River Dunes Wildland Parks. The latter two parks are located in the Central Mixedwood Subregion. Maybelle River WP is located in the Athabasca Plain Subregion. In the summers of 2001 and 2002, three wildland parks located in the Kazan Upland Subregion were surveyed. These were La Butte Creek and Fidler-Greywillow in 2001 and Colin-Cornwall Lakes in 2002 (Macaulay 2002, Macaulay 2003). Most recently, two wildland parks within the Subarctic Subregion were surveyed; the Caribou Mountains in 2003 and Birch Mountains in 2004. These surveys were the first for all of these parks.

The plan outlines the type and extent of outdoor recreation and tourism opportunities, facilities and services including the delivery of heritage appreciation programs that assist Albertans and visitors to understand and appreciate our natural heritage while ensuring its ongoing preservation. The plan was prepared with extensive public input and will be reviewed and revised periodically. The Minister responsible for parks and protected areas has authorized the implementation of the management plan and retains the authority to amend or interpret its provisions.

Recreation corridors are an important component of an overall strategy to increase physical activity and improve the health and wellness of Albertans. Recreation corridors also provide opportunities for economic development, rural diversification, tourism promotion, and economic retention. The Alberta Recreation Corridors Legislative Review Committee was established to provide advice regarding the review of existing legislation related to recreation corridors in Alberta, to address the needs, issues and concerns related to existing trails and future recreation corridors, and to consider, if appropriate, what new legislation would be necessary to support planning, design, construction and operation of recreation corridors in the province. This report provides the Committee's recommendations to the Minister of Community Development.

Further, the guidelines are intended to provide a measure of consistency and standardization when collecting data for and providing data to the Alberta Natural Heritage Information Centre (ANHIC) and to other units or groups that collect and use natural heritage data.
