The Government of Alberta is responsible for ensuring the wise use of the province's water resources on behalf of all Albertans. In entrusting this right to government, Albertans expect water will be managed and conserved to ensure a healthy environment and a high quality of life, now and in the future. In return, there is an expectation that the sustainability of this important resource will be achieved through the efforts of all citizens and their interactions with water at home, at work and at play.

The first section provides a broad overview of Alberta's land, its uses, management and challenges. The second section provides more information about the many ways in which Alberta's lands are used and the contributions the land makes to our well-being. It includes information about agriculture, forestry, energy, tourism and recreation, settlements, First Nations, Metis Settlements, climate change, watersheds, biological diversity, fish and wildlife, and parks and protected areas.

Transmission is by nature a long-term investment. This policy must therefore be forward looking and sustainable. Transmission policy must ensure that Albertans continue to receive safe, reliable, and efficient electric service wherever they live and work in the province. A robust transmission system will provide the underlying foundation for continued economic growth throughout the province and development of Alberta's vast resource base.

For many years, Alberta has extensively developed its energy minerals. However, the province also possesses a wide range of other minerals: base and precious metals, gemstones and industrial minerals. To enhance the economic benefit of these resources for all Albertans, Alberta's throne speech for 1999/2000 committed the government to develop a policy on non-energy minerals, streamline the administration of mining regulations, and improve geological information on minerals. Alberta Energy assembled a team from across government to establish the strategies for meeting these commitments. This document presents the results of the work of this team, which is a framework that outlines the vision, goals and strategic directions for ensuring orderly, environmentally responsible mineral exploration and development in Alberta.
