This annual publication provides a synopsis of provincial recovery implementation actions related to the whitebark pine and limber pine recovery plans. It supports accountability and transparency in tracking and implementing recovery actions and priorities. A list of partner agencies supporting Alberta's recovery implementation is included.

Description

Whitebark pine and limber pine trees can live over 1,000 years. They establish and grow at high elevations under harsh conditions that many other trees cannot tolerate including windy, dry conditions, in poor soils, and at treeline. Whitebark pine and limber pine may establish rapidly after fire, and aid in early establishment of high-elevation forests. They can form pure stands but usually grow with other species. Whitebark pine protects snowpack, regulating flows of mountain creeks and rivers. The large, nutritious seeds of both pines are an important food for almost 100 species of birds and animals. Whitebark pine relies totally, and limber pine relies heavily, on the Clark’s nutcracker to reproduce – this jay-sized bird pecks seeds out of cones to cache in the ground where they germinate. Whitebark pine and limber pine form unique forest communities that are fundamental to the biodiversity of the mountains and foothills of Alberta.

Limber pine, a slow-growing, long-lived species of pine which grows in the Montane and lower Supalpine natural subregions of western Alberta, is listed as Endangered in Alberta. The goal of this recovery plan is to conserve existing populations and habitat while restoring populations across the species' current and historical provincial range in sufficient numbers to continue functioning in its ecological role. The plan provides background information on the limber pine, describes the threats facing the species, outlines proposed strategies to address these threats, and presents an action plan that lists priority actions required to maintain and restore the species.

Alberta whitebark pine, a slow-growing, long-lived species which grows in the high mountain forests of western Alberta at treeline and in upper subalpine forests, is listed as Endangered in Alberta. This wildlife status report looks at the limber pine, one of five pine species native to Alberta. Widely distributed throughout the western United States, in Canada it is confined to the Montane subregion of the Rocky Mountain Natural Region in Alberta and to a few small disjunct stands in the East Kootenays of southeastern British Columbia. This report summarizes current and historical information about limber pine in Alberta. It is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

Description

This wildlife status report looks at the whitebark pine, a hardy species that is an important part of high elevation forests in the mountainous regions of western North America where it is found. This hardy tree is a "keystone" species, as its seeds provide an important food source for a number of animals. In Alberta, the species is found in isolated populations in the Rocky Mountains from Willmore Wilderness Park south to the Canada-U.S. border. However, exact numbers of individuals are difficult to estimate because of limited stand inventory throughout its provincial distribution. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.
