Very few human health risks are present in fishes and wildlife in Alberta. Careful handling of wild game and thorough washing, cooking and freezing also reduces the risk of human infection. Anyone who finds something that looks unusual in harvested fish or wildlife can contact our Fish and Wildlife offices for more information.

Description

Many parasites infect fish, but only a few such as the broad tapeworm, Diphyllobothrium spp., occasionally infect man. The larval stage of these parasites develops in fish while the adults develop in various fish-eating mammals, marine mammals or fish-eating birds. The best known species in this group, D. latum, is the longest tapeworm in man, reaching a length of 10 meters. This parasite is found worldwide and is common in countries where raw or undercooked fish is eaten.

Description

Two species of hookworms are parasites in dogs in Alberta. The smaller species, Uncinaria stenocephala (males = 7.0 mm; females = 10.0 mm long) tolerates the cold and is the most common hookworm in dogs in Canada. The second species, Ancylostoma caninum, is larger (males = 11 mm; females 15 mm long), but requires a warmer climate in which to develop. This species is not common in Canada.

Giardia spp. are single-celled parasitic organisms (protozoa) found in the intestines of cats and many other animals. These microscopic parasites attach to the intestinal wall or swim freely in the mucous lining of the intestine. Approximately four per cent of pet cats in North America are expected to have Giardia. Cats less than three years of age are more often infected than older cats.
