Description

Alberta Lepidoptera Inventories are initiated by both the Alberta Government and members of the Alberta Lepidopterist Guild (ALG) who are working together to document all species found in Alberta’s Parks and Protected Areas. Resulting species lists are used by personnel in resource management planning. This report summaries all species that have been documented in Dinosaur Provincial Park. A total of 17 families and 267 species were collected in the park, including 16 three that have a provincial Species Conservation Rank of S1 and 13 that have a rank of S2.

This report is a summary of all Lepidoptera species that are known from the Wainwright Dunes Ecological Reserve. A total of 22 families and 309 species were collected in Wainwright Dunes Ecological Reserve including two that are provincially ranked as S1 and seven as S2.

Description

Tolman Bridge, is located in the valley of the Red Deer River, 18 km (10 miles) east of the town of Trochu. The bridge and adjoining Park land are in the north half of section 14, range 22, township 34, west of the Fourth Meridian. The coordinates at the bridge are 51.503N and 113.009W. The elevation ranges from around 600 m at the river to 800 m or so near the top of the river breaks. In a Natural Area Inspection Report dated 25 June 1982 and in the 1989 Trochu 82 P/14, 1:50,000 topographic map, the land southwest of the bridge was designated as the “Tolman Bridge Municipal Park” while that southeast of the bridge was referred to as the “Tolman Bridge Recreation Area”. In an Alberta, Department of the Environment, Parks and Protected Areas Division paper dated 9 May 2000, the areas on both sides of the river are included in “Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park”. Campgrounds are found in both areas and they are patrolled by a Conservation Officer stationed in Drumheller.

Description

Provincial Parks and other areas where natural vegetation is protected are of great value as their flora and fauna is typical of what was in Alberta before widespread agricultural activities which resulted in a replacement of many native species by weedy species associated with cultivated grains and hay crops. As a result, many of Alberta’s “rare and endangered” species are now found only, or mainly, in such protected areas.

The Weidemeyer's admiral is a Species of Special Concern in Alberta because its breeding range is limited and it is found only in the Milk River Basin of southern Alberta. This plan provides background information on the species and outlines a set of objectives and management actions to help meet the goal of maintaining current distribution and breeding populations of the butterfly in Alberta. Conservation management plans are developed for Species of Special Concern in Alberta, to provide guidance for land and resource management decisions that affect the species and their habitat. They are intended to be a resource tool for provincial and regional fish and wildlife, land and resource management staff.

This wildlife status report looks at the Weidemeyer's admiral, a butterfly whose distribution within Canada is limited to two groups of known populations along the lower Milk River in southern Alberta. The total known population in Alberta is estimated to be a maximum of 3000 adults. It is included on the list of species that may be at risk in Alberta. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

Description

An overview was conducted of the butterflies of the Southern Headwaters at Risk Project (SHARP) area in extreme southwestern Alberta. The project resulted in compilation of a preliminary bibliography and a table of species known from the study area as well as those that may yet be found in the study area. Distribution and general habitat association is presented within a natural regions mapping framework. Peak flight periods are provided in summary form to aid future field surveys for target species. The SHARP area is the most productive area in the province in terms of butterfly species diversity. with 78 % of all known Alberta species known from this small comer of the province. The area is also home to 9 species that are not known from any other area of Alberta and 31 species that are considered to be species at risk. The area is therefore highly significant both provincially and nationally.
