Description

This annual publication reports on the work of Alberta Environment and Parks' Compliance Assurance program. The program operates as part of the department's overall regulatory framework to protect and enhance the province's ecosystems and to ensure environmental, social and economic outcomes for the future are met. It conducts activities aimed at influencing the behaviour of regulated parties. Its principal functions are to promote voluntary compliance, detect and reverse non-compliance and, as appropriate, punish offenders and deter future non-compliance.

Description

In 2011, the Government of Alberta Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development conducted the Social Network Analysis Pilot Project Phase 1 as part of a cumulative effects in action prototype, where the objective is to develop and implement a Phosphorus Management Plan for the Bow River to address phosphorus loading issues between the Bearspaw and Bassano Dams. To build on this work, ESRD contracted Objective Research and Evaluation Inc. to gather supplementary information for the SNAPP for the Bow River Phosphorus Management Plan. Supplementary information was gathered by conducting 21 semi-structured interviews with consenting internal and external project stakeholders and coding interview responses using thematic analysis.

Provincial Parks and other areas where natural vegetation is protected are of great value as the flora and fauna present in them is typical of what was in Alberta before widespread agricultural activities replaced them with flora and fauna that was reduced in numbers and made up of species that were associated with cultivated grains and hay crops. As a result, many of Alberta’s “rare and endangered” species are now found only, or mainly, in such protected areas.

Description

The Canadian Shield ecoregion is one of six natural regions found in Alberta. It is restricted to the extreme northeastern part of the province (Strong & Leggat 1992). This region is further divided into the Kazan Upland and Athabasca Plain that are located north and south of Lake Athabasca, respectively. Although the Lepidoptera are one of the dominant insect groups of the Boreal Plain (Danks 1979), very few accounts of local butterfly inventories are available (Bird et al. 1995), and no published inventories of moths exist for any given site in Alberta. The recently established parks within the Athabasca Plain subregion, consisting of the Richardson River Dunes Wildland Park, Marguerite Crag & Tail Wildland Park, Maybelle River Wildland Park and Athabasca Dunes Ecological Reserve, encompass a unique sand dune complex.
