Description

The Riparian Areas Assessment of the Swan River Watershed focused on assessing riparian habitat along creek, stream and river shorelines. This dataset was created for the Lesser Slave Water Council as a part of a large scale riparian area assessment in Alberta. The overall goal of this project was to quantify and characterize the riparian habitat management in the Lesser Slave Lake watershed by assessing riparian areas along approximately 582 km of shoreline. The riparian areas that were assessed were located within the Swan River watershed (HUC 8) and included the left and right banks of the Swan, Moosehorn and Inverness Rivers. This study created a recent land cover layer within 50 m of selected shorelines and use this layer to assess the intactness of riparian areas along major waterbodies. This study developed numeric nutrient target ranges, representing low, moderate and high risk of aquatic ecosystem impairment, for small agricultural streams in Alberta in the absence of Alberta-specific numeric nutrient water quality guidelines. The transport of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, from agricultural areas into surface water can lead to eutrophication of waterbodies. As a user of water, Alberta’s agriculture sector has a vested interest in surface water protection. Numeric guidelines for nutrients in surface waters serve a valuable role as benchmarks for water quality monitoring and watershed management programs, and agricultural sustainability initiatives.

Alberta Environment and Protected Areas and the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) jointly developed a Native Cover indicator for the province of Alberta. Native cover is defined as an area that is free of visible anthropogenic alteration (human footprint). There are two types of native cover: aquatic and wetland native cover (AWNC) and terrestrial native cover (TNC). AWNC represents the amount of aquatic habitat, including bogs, fens, swamps, marshes, open water, and riparian areas that are free of visible human footprint. while TNC represents the amount of upland (non-aquatic) habitat free of visible human footprint. Alberta Environment and Protected Areas developed an Interior habitat indicator for the province of Alberta. The indicator is the percentage area outside of a set distance from human footprint, and can be calculated for the entire province or a specific area where human footprint data are available. This dataset provides values for all Hydrologic Unit Code 8 (HUC 8) watersheds in Alberta for 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2018. The distance at which an area was considered interior habitat was estimated using rounded buffers from the edges of the wall-to-wall Human Footprint Inventories produced by the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI).

Alberta Environment and Protected Areas and the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) jointly developed a Landscape Connectivity indicator for the province of Alberta. An Equivalent Connected Area index was selected to measure landscape connectivity and assess changes in connectivity over time. The indicator accounts for three broad land cover types: Upland Forest, Lowland Forest and Grass-Shrub. These rules are in addition to the Alberta Timber Harvest Planning and Operating Ground Rules. Where a rule in this addendum and a rule in the provincial OGR relate to the same subject matter or objective, the rule in the addendum governs. FMP-specific addendums are supplemental to the OGRs and will be negotiated with the applicable FMA holder where additional ground rules are needed to address specific strategies in an FMP or unique physical or non-physical landscape attributes.
