Description

This report is the final deliverable of an air quality modelling contract. The study built upon previous modelling studies focused on central Alberta and expanded the scope to include all regions of Alberta. Other improvements in this study included modelling a complete calendar year, emissions inventory updates for key sectors, and sector-based source apportionment for seven distinct sectors. Province-wide source apportionment will help inform air quality management initiatives, such as managing against the Canadian Ambient Air Quality Standards and other provincial air quality frameworks.

This study investigates key issues identified in the Joint Canada-Alberta Oil Sands Monitoring program regarding water quality of tributaries to the lower Athabasca River, specifically: the current state of water quality; the distribution of contaminants; whether the presence of toxic substances is increasing or decreasing, and their rate of change' and whether substances added to the rivers by natural and man-made discharges are likely to cause deterioration of water quality.

In response to sulphur and hydrocarbon odour complaints, Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD) deployed the Mobile Air Monitoring Laboratory (MAML) to Kuusamo Industrial Park area on April 3rd, 2012. ESRD conducted air monitoring at two sites within the industrial park and at one site across Highway 11. Kuusamo Industrial Park consists of light and heavy commercial activities such as machine shops and base operations of oil field services. This site is located in the northwestern portion of Red Deer County, approximately 10 kilometers west of the town of Sylvan Lake, Alberta. A commercial facility located on the southwest corner of the industrial park has been identified as a potential source of the sulphur and hydrocarbon odours. Odour complaints from the Three Creeks area were received by the Energy Resources Conservation Board and Alberta Environment. Odours were noted when the wind speed was low, and it is likely that this meteorological condition contributed to the accumulation of emitted compounds in the area. The odours in the area were identified as "hydrocarbon type" and air samples were collected at various locations within the affected area, at the potential source locations, and also at background (reference) sites. These samples were taken to a laboratory and analyzed for volatile organic compounds (also known as hydrocarbons).

A study was initiated to evaluate the concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) at two sites in Sherwood Park, east of Edmonton. The data presented in this report were collected between January 2008 and January 2009. Overall, particulate concentrations at the two sites were comparable. Concentrations were generally higher during the winter months and for periods of low wind speeds.

Description

The wood waste burner operated by Tolko forest Products is located within the town limits of High Level. The current study investigates the quality of air in the area with a special focus on particulate matter. Although a wide size range of particles can be emitted by wood burning, the current study focused on concentrations of fine particulate matter. The concentration of particulate matter was monitored at one location for five and a half months, beginning in October 2008. In addition, the department's mobile laboratory was used to monitor a suite of gases and particles at various sites in and near the town. This was performed on two days at the start of the study.

A short monitoring survey was conducted in the Bonanza area, northwest of Grande Prairie near the British Columbia border, to evaluate the quality of air. Landowners are concerned about the impact of oil and gas activity on air quality in the area. As a result, this report focuses on pollutants typically associated with such activities. The survey was conducted using Alberta Environment's Mobile Air Quality Monitoring Laboratory. Samples were collected on two days in February 2009.

A study was initiated to evaluate the concentration of fine particulate matter in Sherwood Park, east of Edmonton. The data presented in this interim report were collected between January and June 2008, at two monitoring sites. Overall, the particulate concentrations at two sites were comparable. Concentrations were generally higher during the winter months and for periods with low wind speeds. This is likely due to a larger semi-volatile fraction forming the sampled particles and/or lower mixing height during the winter months resulting in higher ground level concentrations.
