Ambient air quality assessment summary reports are produced annually under the Capital Region Air Quality Management Framework. The purpose of these reports is to assign an ambient air quality level to each monitoring station in the Capital Region for the Framework's four contaminants of concern. The 2014 assessment summary report contains level assignments for : NO2 and SO2 based on the 2014 data; and for PM2.5 and O3 based on the 2011-2013 data period.

The Ministry assessed particulate matter and ozone data collected at Alberta monitoring stations between 2001 and 2012. These assessments were performed annually, and each covered a three-year period (2010-2012, for example). As a result of these assessments, the department assigned action levels to individual monitoring stations and to the Census Metropolitan Areas of Edmonton and Calgary. Episodes caused by natural, background or trans-boundary influences were removed in these assessments. These Fact sheets outline the assessment results.

The goal of this approach is to manage nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide, fine particulate matter, and ozone in the region and to provide clarity for all emitters about operating requirements for emissions management that may be necessary to respond to cumulative impacts of these contaminants.
